I say this as someone who cares about dogs and other animals very much and considers pets a part of the family, but I think that -Heaven forbid it- in an hypothetical situation, you would protect your sister or any possible children more effectively than you would animals.

It's harder to bring yourself to intervene when it's an animal in danger, because you can see them struggle and a part of you says subconsciously says "it can defend itself", even if consciously you want to do something and help. It's so much harder to push past the situation and act.
