I have a squick for kids getting tortured and killed, especially those who stir my parental feelings, especially if it's being done because society doesn't value the kids. So yeah, not too into that series for that reason.

I can read the books, but this is why I'm a little wierd about seeing the movie.

I was way more freaked out by the movie than by the books. I was kind of afraid to tell anyone, too, since I was really excited for the movie and took the night off from work special to go see the first showing.

And I did enjoy the movie and thought it was worth it but for several nights I had nightmares that I was in the arena. (Even though I'm decades beyond tribute age.)

Both me and my best (male) friend sort of looked at each other when the movie was over and agreed that it was a very "hard" film that was sometimes difficult to watch.

I think another thing is that most media (from video games to Hollywood movies) absolutely avoid showing kids getting killed. It's a taboo and most viewers are totally unaccustomed to see it.

But in any case - the movie really affected me (and I don't even want kids).

I misread your comment at first as "I have a kink for kids getting tortured and killed!" Sorry!

I have not read or watched Hunger Games and only have very second-hand knowledge about any of it but my heart just goes like a stone thinking about what I heard about one of the characters, Rue (Which is really bad for me because my little brother's nickname is Ru).

Underprivileged kids, loyal dogs, physical violence motivated by racial hatred or homophobia are just impossible to handle for me.

Anon, bravery is not about being fearless.

It's about doing what you think is right and good despite being scared shitless.

I'd think Katniss was petrified too when she volunteered - but she did it out of love.

I say this as someone who cares about dogs and other animals very much and considers pets a part of the family, but I think that -Heaven forbid it- in an hypothetical situation, you would protect your sister or any possible children more effectively than you would animals.

It's harder to bring yourself to intervene when it's an animal in danger, because you can see them struggle and a part of you says subconsciously says "it can defend itself", even if consciously you want to do something and help. It's so much harder to push past the situation and act.

It could be anon, that you're afraid of failing to protect - which isn't a bad thing! You are more likely to think about ways to protect rather than be over confident and assumed that if you're protecting you will win.

It says a lot about you (good things) that even after your bad experiences you still want to protect your sister (and dogs I assume)
