Can I ask what book this actually is? The other comments make it sound intriguing!

It's a book about a "utopian" society in which everyone's role in the community is established, all aspects of life are organized, and basically any pain or discomfort they experience is minimal. There is no more suffering, but there's not love or much depth of emotion, either.

Each person, from the time they're born to the age of 12, progresses in some way or another with each year they grow (at a certain age they're given a bike, or a new set of clothes with buttons on the front to emphasize independence, things like that). At 12, your job is chosen. And the main character, Jonas, is selected to be in a position he knows very little about: the Receiver of Memory.

Don't want to give too much away, but it's very much about what it means to have emotions and to really live. It's not shown as being ideal or even very nice, which I rather like, but it is shown as being necessary.

Yeah this is my favorite book, if you can't tell. I got it from a favorite teacher years ago and it still tugs at my heartstrings whenever I read it. It's an easy read, so you should be able to get through it quickly.

[personal profile] castorochiaro gave a great summary of the book! If you're interested in checking it out, Anon, it's called The Giver and is written by Lois Lowry.

Here are links to it on:
Amazon;
goodreads;
Google Books; and
Wikipedia!

I'd suggest taking a look at it. It's a good introduction- for younger readers, especially- into themes of dystopian societies and the freedom of choice. Most people who read it aren't usually aware that it's actually the first book in a series (suffers from the same problem as A Wrinkle in Time there, sadly), but many also hold that its impact is best felt read alone.

Do consider giving it a look! Most libraries should also have a copy in stock, it's a fairly well known title.
