[personal profile] castorochiaro gave a great summary of the book! If you're interested in checking it out, Anon, it's called The Giver and is written by Lois Lowry.

I'd suggest taking a look at it. It's a good introduction- for younger readers, especially- into themes of dystopian societies and the freedom of choice. Most people who read it aren't usually aware that it's actually the first book in a series (suffers from the same problem as A Wrinkle in Time there, sadly), but many also hold that its impact is best felt read alone.

Do consider giving it a look! Most libraries should also have a copy in stock, it's a fairly well known title.
