I used to do that. I later created a real account for my second fandom, met a few likeminded individuals (we think canon is laughably bad and the fandom is even worse but we just can't get over it) and started a capslocky lol comm. It's so, so much more fun than just trolling alone, and because it's the kind of fandom where 'lol' is the only intelligent attitude, we've basically gathered everyone in the fandom who DOES write good fic in one place to enjoy ourselves together. I would highly recommend you do something similar, OP.

I can't say I like trolls much (although it really depends on what "trolling" you're going with: constructive criticism in-between bitch-slaps or just harassment?), but at least you're blowing off steam, so. vov

Speaking of Trolls

I miss Tara Gilesbie and her epic trollfic of the ages. I don't think any other troll can surpass the queen tbqh.

Never heard of her. Is she worse than Msscribe from HP fandom? Because if so, wow.

She's the author of My Immortal, so just a badfic (or trollfic, if you think it's intentional) author. I honestly don't know which she is- Poe's Law applies.

That is because you fail, nonny.

Not gonna lie, I kind of envy trolls for their ability to speak freely. I've always wished I could be as blunt and honest about certain things as I feel. I hate stepping on people's toes, so I usually just keep quiet...but goddamn some people in fandom really piss me off sometimes.

So I could see why one would do that. Unless you're just being a total pain and an asshat for no reason. In that case, no. Stop.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-08 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Speaking freely is awesome! :D (Until you get banned because you're saying what no one wants to hear, whoops.)

Go to anon comms. They can be oddly freeing when you hate something in your given fandom and need to gripe about it without potentially making yourself look like an asshole.

*bro fist* I'm a MNF in one of my fandoms and an active anon troll in the same fandom, and no one's ever linked me to my trolling. People think I'm so nice and reasonable and above the fandom wank when really, I'm stirring shit like crazy with no one the wiser. It's a great feeling.

My opinion of you depends on what kind of a troll you are, I guess. There's the clown trolls who just make absurd statements and sit back and watch the froth. They aren't too bad. Some of them are even pretty creative, writing funny awful fic. But then there's the vicious trolls who attempt to genuinely hurt people, leave nasty flames on vulnerable writers fics, harrass people, orchestrate pile drives, just in general take things too far. If you are one of those, fuck you.

I'm glad you aren't using your BNF capacity to troll though. If that were the case, I'd have a low opinion of you regardless.

craziest troll ever award?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, let's have it out. Who's the craziest troll to ever troll? What fandom has the craziest or highest percentage of trolls?

Re: craziest troll ever award?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
there are some pretty crazy ones on tumblr

for any fandom

any

it's like it amplifies craziness

possibly because there is so little time between submitting something and it appear on the net

leads to impulsive posting

plus the reblogs

i don't think highly of tumblr's enabling aspect, is what i'm getting at

House MD had the most douches per square inch of any fandom that I've ever seen. Many outright trolls crying for attention, plus tons of over exalted fic writers who *aren't* that good but think they are writing literary masterpieces (they even have a little hall of fame for them to pat one anthers backs with).

Not to mention the ridiculous amount of rabid wannabe SJWs who want to make themselves feel powerful by howling privilege or misogynist at anyone who gets close to them regardless of the words used.

I left that fandom years ago but it still makes me shudder just thinking about the wank and the horrible people who made it up.

I was around during the absolutely batshit insanity that was HP fandom back in the day. I'm afraid for humanity if there are crazier trolls than those.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I've been in fandoms that had crazy, including some that are considered incredibly wanky (Supernatural, I'm looking at you), but nothing has been as crazy as early 00's HP.

a curious newbie wants to know

I've only heard a few tales, but what exactly was it like, back then? I was late to the party by about a decade. D:

AYRT

Besides the excellent link the other anon gave you, there's also the Cassandra Claire plagiarism wank: http://www.journalfen.net/community/bad_penny/8985.html

Plus the whole GT meltdown (mentioned in the Msscribe write up, with a link to the f_w entry).

Plus so many different wanks (especially over pairings) they eventually made a f_w offshoot for just HP wank. (Sorta, was more complicated than that).

For a while, every single day on my FL there was someone blowing up over something, it seemed like. And even though it was a huge fandom, it was really centered on LJ, so you didn't have to go far to run into stuff.

I truly don't know why it was so wanky. Perhaps because the BNFs were so widely known, and connected to actual archives? So they felt more like 'official' BNFs, somehow. Or perhaps it's because it was big right during the move from mailing lists to communities, so more people could comment and have conversations, but others were expecting the more singular responses, like in mailing lists? Or maybe there were a lot more shit-stirrers. :P /musings

So essentially, you're playing Not Touching, Can't Get Mad with fandom.
