The above commenters have basically said what I feel. SJ is a good thing and the SJW have good points. But their execution leaves something to be desired and does little to actually make a difference. And yes, I do think some of them look for things to be offended by.

Once thing that always annoys me is the way so many of them are quick (often happy) to jump on someone for using an innocent phrase or term that is obscurely offensive. I mean, yes the 'N' word is known to be offensive and I wouldn't take pity on someone who used it, but I've seen people get dog-piled for using "lame" or "moronic". I'm happy not to use those terms if they offend someone, but the fact is I'm not psychic; I'm not going to know every term in the world that is deemed offensive.

(I'm going to get away from what the above poster actually said here. So, yeah, my comment isn't meant to assume this opinion is the above poster's opinion)

Plus, they ignore the possibility of multiple definitions. Not disagree with it in certain instances, but flat-out throw away the possibility in general. Some of those words, like "lame" for instance, have gone through *years* of development. They have meanings no longer attached at all to the original.

That doesn't mean someone can't be offended by it, but someone else - especially when you are telling that someone how they should or shouldn't speak - is allowed to look at the matter and have their own opinion on the terminology. It doesn't mean they don't care about people. They just view language differently than you. /end rant (It just really irritates me when the offended party acts as if only their subgroup or minority's opinion is allowed.)

SA

I definitely agree, and, in fact, that brings up another point: a lot of these people don't seem to understand that what is considered an offensive term will vary between countries and cultures. Again, there seem to be terms that are pretty much straight-forward in being offensive, but, for example, not all people recognize the word "spade" as possibly having racist meanings.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
You just picked a perfect example because I've got no clue what "spade" means other than a garden tool. Gonna go look it up, but, yeah, different regions and all that. :-)

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
The reason I picked it is because I remember an incident (on FS actually) in which someone used the saying "Call a spade a spade" which (outside of the US) simply means to say something in a straight forward manner and was around long before "spade" became a racial slur. They were immediately dog-piled. When they pointed out that they didn't live in the US and had no idea that "spade" was a racist term here, there was a chorus of "Well, that doesn't matter! Ignorance is no excuse! EDUCATE YOURSELF!"

So basically we need to know the popular slurs from every country and culture lest we should accidentally use one without meaning to.

Also, the US is a big place. Where I grew up a 'spade' really is a spade.

I've lived multiple places around the US of A and had never heard the other definition either- and I was born/spent the first part of my life in the south, so go figure.

Completely agree with this! Probably two days ago, I ended up getting called a self-hating racist bigot because I used the word "mulatto" in reference to myself. Like, I understand that maybe YOU know the etymology of the word (whether what they know is accurate or not), but I DON'T, and to me, "mulatto" is NOT an offensive or racist term, and I'm pretty sure I'm allowed to choose how I relate to a term that refers to me and not you.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 01:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Damn, what a "self-hating racist-bigot" even is? Maybe there's a Standard Vocabulary of SJWs, and when they write a comment, they just randomly choose words? (Or maybe I'm just an oppressive bigot monster with limited understanding.)
