There's shades of grey to everything. Obviously racism is bad, sexism is bad, etc. Agreeing with that, even if you personally find the tone of the person pointing out the -ism to be unpleasant, just means you're a half-decent person with some logical reasoning skills.

That's because they're really not entirely wrong ... the real problem is that they take everything to such an extreme AND they don't bother to listen to the people who they think they're helping when those people try to tell them that whatever point they're trying to make isn't entirely correct.

SJ warriors on the other hand... sometimes they're right and sometimes they're completely off, but they're SJ warriors for a reason: they make everything into a personal war whether it's wise to go to that extreme or not.

Well, they do have a point. Sometimes.

The problem is that it's buried in layers of hypocritical douche-baggary and general assholishness. :(

For example, saying that "'xxx-ism' is bad" well, that's true. But then sometimes it becomes "'xxx-ism' is bad and if you don't completely agree with my POV 100% you should go kill yourself" and/or posting pictures of self-harm in order to trigger other people into self-harming....

(Yes, I've seen this happen, no I'm not going to post links, yes it was on tumblr.)

Any point they had, IMO, is instantly nullified by their general horribleness.

I agree with Loracarol above.

I mean obviously being all for SJ is great. I think, though, that calling ignorant people assholes and dickwads is going too far. Really, all it takes to make your point is, Hey, did you know that the word XYZ could be hurtful to people? Here's why. Because honestly, most people don't know.

However, going onto someone's post where they said, "Well that movie was lame", and saying,

YOU ARE SUCH A DICK I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU SAID THAT WOW YOU SHOULD END IT RIGHT NOW BECAUSE YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT ANYONE BUT YOURSELF blah blah blah just leads to a lot of confusion and hurt where there didn't need to be any.

Kind of like the feminists who preach women > men instead of women = men. They have some points-- we should be equal. But at the same time, going around and calling people douchebags and horrible people because they choose to be a SAHM is just evil.

Social justice is important.

Talking about and facing our own racism, sexism and privilege is very important. Learning from it and being called out on it is very important.

What is completely useless is the SJW's attitudes of holier-than-thou, bullying, and passive aggression. They want to be right and everyone else is wrong, and - that's not how you go about getting your message heard.

That's why they're so annoying. If they were wrong all the time, people would just laugh at them and ignore them. Instead, they mix insightful, meaningful, well-educated truths into their bullshit and make it impossible to just ignore them, because you have to separate their good points from their bullshit and explain why the good points are good and the bullshit is bullshit.

SJW: And that one female character isn't as good as something as that one male character! SEXISM.
Normal Person: Um no?
SJW: *rages* You're perpetuating existing sexist paradigms in the patriarchal structure within western society through your internalized misogyny!

More complicated than that, but y'know...

(And SJW's aren't a separate labeled category of people who are all clearly separate from non-SJWs -- SJWism is a way of acting, IMO, not really a type of person.)

The above commenters have basically said what I feel. SJ is a good thing and the SJW have good points. But their execution leaves something to be desired and does little to actually make a difference. And yes, I do think some of them look for things to be offended by.

Once thing that always annoys me is the way so many of them are quick (often happy) to jump on someone for using an innocent phrase or term that is obscurely offensive. I mean, yes the 'N' word is known to be offensive and I wouldn't take pity on someone who used it, but I've seen people get dog-piled for using "lame" or "moronic". I'm happy not to use those terms if they offend someone, but the fact is I'm not psychic; I'm not going to know every term in the world that is deemed offensive.

A stopped clock is right twice a day. My main problem with SJWs isn't that they are always, always wrong about everything, it's that their culture of shame and dogpiling and buzzwords and "intent doesn't matter" and cliquishness hurts their causes more than it helps. They've become a cancer in fandom.

And it really vastly underestimates the contribution of all those people who have been keeping fandom friendly all these years without the hobnail boots. To listen to the SJW crowd, fandom was /b/ before they came around to clean it up. No it really wasn't.

My major problem with SJWs is the hypocrisy. Their general thing seems to be 'No one should be allowed to police anyone else's identity... unless it's us and we don't like you.' I have literally seen some groups go into a frothing rage at someone who told a POC that they don't look that dark... and then turn right around and tell someone else that they 'look white'.

Also, apparently it's derailing to post using an animal icon in a rape thread because if you do, you must be a furry and rape animals.

Oh, they have a point and, for the most part, I agree with them.

Still doesn't change the fact that they are asshats and that they take WAAAAAAAAAAAAY too damn many, TINY things way too fucking seriously and suck the fun out of everything.

There are SJWs and then there are SJA's (Social Justice Assholes).

SJWs are people who remember that people (including themselves) are flawed and will make mistakes. but 99% of the time, they remember that the goal is equality for everyone and that education is the key.

SJA's are people who took a despair arrow to the knee, got poisoned by hate, and are twisted mirror images of the very hatred they claim to fight. Nobody shows them any kindness, and in turn, all they know is how to belittle, shame, suspect, and name call.

In short, SJW: "Being nice feels good and I want everyone to feel good and be nice and fair."

SJA: "I hurt and I want everyone to feel as terrible and miserable on the inside as I do."

The problem I find with trying to discuss anything with a SJW isn't that they never have a point. Sometimes they do.

But I find that getting into a discussion with a SJW is often rather like trying to talk to a dyed-in-the-wool radical fundamentalist (not of any specific religion, just the general mindset.) They're indoctrinated with specific ideas about their cause of choice, and even if you approve of the cause in general, if you disagree with them about any of the specifics, you're branded an evil bigoted asshole.

It doesn't matter if you disagree respectfully, in good faith, with a reasoned counter-argument. And God help you if you're a member of the wrong group or not a member of the right group; you're automatically disqualified from even having an opinion, much less being right.

At some point, you're going to find yourself offering calm and reasonable discourse which will be met with capslocked insults and histrionics, because the only acceptable outcome to some of these people is that you quit arguing and meekly agree with them, regardless of what you actually do think.

It's exhausting, and discouraging, and it does sometimes sour me on the cause in question even if I started out sympathetic to it--hell, even if I'm a card-carrying member of the group the SJW claims they're defending!

Good people sometimes disagree, even vehemently, even on some fairly basic issues. This does not necessarily make them evil people. It makes them human, different, and not willing to surrender their own convictions in order to be judged not-an-asshole by the other person. Sometimes the only reasonable solution is to agree to disagree and walk away--or just walk away.

Unfortunately, many SJW's (and for that matter, people online in general) seem to be terribly bad at recognizing when it's time to do that.

No one's every really argued with their point, bigotry is bad. The debate is only about their methods of ending that bigotry in fandom.

Sometimes they do, I mean. Really. There are a lot of times that SJWs DO have a legitimate point - the problem is that because of this valid point of theirs, they think it's okay for them to bully, harass, and stalk people. Valid point or no, there's no amount of righteousness that makes this behavior okay.
