A lot of so-called "SJWs" (I hate that term so hard, as it only exists to shame and denigrate people who are pro-social justice and anti-bigotry) are marginalized and discriminated against groups, and for a lot of those people, seeing one more slur, seeing one more asshole comment is going to be the last straw. It should not be their responsibility to stay calm and educate people on how they're being bigots -- the responsibility to not be bigots rests with the other party.

So yeah, when someone says "I fucking hate woman characters on TV!" or "that fucking b*tch had it coming," or "I'm gonna use the word f*g and I'm proud of that!" I'm not going to sit there and nicely explain why f*g is an offensive slur or why the people in examples one and two are being sexist. I'm going to call them on being the ignorant assholes they are. It is not my JOB, as a marginalized person, to explain their bigotry to them in nice terms.

If it makes me an "SJW" that I think sometimes it's more important for a marginalized person to feel better by calling a bigot an asshole (being a bigot is being an asshole), then you know what? I'm okay with that.

DA

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
If you want to feel better by calling someone an asshole, then say that you want to call someone an asshole. Don't disguise it under the excuse that you're doing it "for social justice." You're only venting. You might consider your venting justified, and to many people it would be - someone calls you a fag, you call them an asshole.

It's the part where they claim they're doing it for a higher cause that smacks of hypocrisy.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
It's not an "excuse." Shaming and insulting bigots actually does serve a purpose -- above and beyond making a marginalized person feel better, even.

I see a lot of people kvetching about how "SJWs" tend to "shame" people, and you know what? I don't MIND THAT. The thing is, shaming bigots, calling them assholes, whatever? Might make them think twice about what they're saying. Bigotry SHOULD result in shaming. It SHOULD result in being called an asshole. It SHOULD result in being ostracized from the group, because bigotry should not be tolerated.

This BS backlash against "SJWs" is just the effort of bigots to protect their "right" to say bigoted things without facing consequences. The sad part is where you and the other people in this community and fandom as a whole have bought into it hook, line and sinker.

See now, here's where you fucked up. You assume I give a shit how you feel about anything, ever. I don't know you. I don't care about you until you have become a known to me. If your first comment to me is how I'm some horrible ignorant asshole? And that is devoid of context because I should know how I insulted and hurt your super delicate oversensitive ass?

I'm going to assume your some social justice warrior whiner. And while I do know you, the spectrum of my feelings on your butthurt range from apathy to GLEE.

Why do you have such a problem with telling someone why you take issue with what they say? Telling someone who is genuinely confused "you're a bigot!" and such without letting them know why just sounds like someone on the verge of a tantrum or someone trying to be a bully.

Such is the way of a SJW, though.

AYRT

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, I do tell them, more often than not. I educate, but I also get pissed off. I call people assholes when they act like assholes. I call bigots bigots. AND I tell them why.

But nobody wants to fucking hear it. I could write a goddamn dissertation on why someone is being a bigot and THEY WILL NOT LISTEN. All they'll do is write a one-line whine about how "omg you called me a naaaaame and got aaaangry you horrible person!"

Sometimes I get fucking fed up with educating people who DO NOT LISTEN EVER because they prefer to be bigoted assholes, yeah.

Your fucking move.

A lot of so called SJWs are big on painting themselves as the victim and ignoring their own victimizing behavior.

No SJW isn't shaming people who are anti-bigortry and pro-social justice. It's shaming the turds who use their cause as a weapon to hurt people, including the very minority groups that they are supposedly supporting.

The fact that you can't tell that there's a difference suggests you are probably part of the problem. SJWs like to think that the only people who make a difference are those who pile drive and insult others, but you know what, you aren't that special. Fandom was policing itself and calling out real sexism for a long time before this whole SJW movement showed up.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
If fandom was calling out sexism for a long time prior to the "SJW movement", why the fuck was it so bad up until very, very recently?

Oh yeah. Because they fucking sucked at it.

That's not what a SJW is though. They may get called social justice warriors, but that's wrong. It's not about people being angry and fed up, it's about people who approach social justice from a self-satisfying standpoint and usually end up betraying their own beliefs to stroke their own egos.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
And yet, being the person I described above, I get called an "SJW" every ten fucking minutes right here on f!s, so clearly a lot of people don't agree with you. Even so much as daring to call a bigot a bigot will get you called an SJW 'round here.

I made the mistake of trying to talk to an SJW, I was staying calm and others agreed with me that the other was taking things to the extreme. What she understood from that? "FUCKING IDIOTS EVERYONE IS OPPRESSIVE TOWARDS ME!!!!!!" And no matter what she said about "xxx people in general", she always meant herself. I was thinking about ego-stroking too. I hope she felt better about herself after calling me names because if it only raised her blood pressure, I'm really sorry for her.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Very infrequently.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
I think a lot of people have a problem with social justice culture not because it's calling out bigotry, but because it's become super insular and because a lot of it has strayed away from "let's fight prejudice" into "how can I be right on the internet?"

The problems I've personally had with it are:
* Turning people with good ideas into public figures that cannot ever be wrong
* No real acknowledgment that it's possible to go too far (death threats against more moderate SJers, for example- not even people saying bigoted things, but people taking issue with what's said to be the correct representation of their own group)
* Creating a hierarchy where someone's worth is measured by how non-privileged they are, and privilege itself is a reason to tear someone down instead of just a thing that should be minimized
* Which leads to appropriating oppression in an attempt to be the most oppressed (see all the debates about whether heteroromantic asexuals are queer) and minimizing the oppression that others face ("It doesn't matter if you're oppressed for being X, because I'm oppressed for being Y and you're not", which is a really flawed approach to intersectionality)
* Treating social justice as a monolith, where actual actions take a backseat to knowing the "correct" vocabulary and participating in the "correct" way
* Allies taking over causes and policing members of the actual marginalized group
* Minimal room for reasonable dissent among members of the actual marginalized group

I realize not everyone involved in social justice does these things, but I've seen it so much that I'm no longer involved in it as a community.

There are reasons to criticize something besides "it is totally right and I am very uncomfortable w/ that."
fuchsiascreams: (Default)

[personal profile] fuchsiascreams 2012-06-09 08:17 am (UTC)(link)
Completely agree with this, and very well-said. I don't think most of these people are against social justice: they just don't agree with the people who preach social justice, and their extremism and hypocrisy (in a lot of cases).. I think almost everybody can understand being abused, or minimalized, or prejudiced against, in some way, and that there needs to be advocation and reform - but I don't think a lot of people think that being an asshole to an asshole in response for being an asshole is a fair or correct thing to do, especially when you take into account the so-called offenses of some of these "monsters". Telling someone that they deserved to be raped because they triggered someone by forgetting to post a trigger warning is NOT an okay reaction to have, and no amount of righteousness or "deserving it" on the part of the "offender" will make that behavior justifiable.
fuchsiascreams: (Default)

[personal profile] fuchsiascreams 2012-06-09 08:25 am (UTC)(link)
Also,

* Allies taking over causes and policing members of the actual marginalized group
* Minimal room for reasonable dissent among members of the actual marginalized group

are huuuuuge fucking problems, and thank you very much for bringing them up. There have been a lot of times (in my personal experience) where I've seen SJWs insulting and berating minorities (particularly LGBTs) who dissent from the "popular" or "acceptable" opinion that they have deemed that real, standard minorities from that group should have. And if their opinion is different from the standard line (because apparently all members of a specific minority are exactly the same person), then clearly they are just self-hating closeted bigots who have internalized their _________-ism.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
saving this comment, it's really well-worded, thank you!

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT

You make some very good points. I disagree strongly with others (calling people on their privilege is important, especially when they try to talk over members of minority groups!), but most of them I agree with.

However, those problems are, as you said, issues of social justice culture and they must be overcome. Many reasonable members of that culture and community are working towards fixing those issues.

That does not make it okay to label pro-social justice individuals as "SJWs," a shaming tool meant to silence and erase the voices of minority individuals. Calling them out on the issues they may have -- fine. Calling them labels created to silence them and appease bigots because they dared to "get angry" or be vocally pro-social justice, designed to keep them quiet so that bigots can keep on being bigots with impunity... not okay.

Actually, SJW doesn't refer to people who care about social justice; it refers to people who use SJ issues as a tool to cover up their own desire to be a self-righteous asshat (and can end up doing more harm than good for their issue too).

SJW exists to shame people who twist a good issue and use it for selfish reasons.
