I agree with Loracarol above.

I mean obviously being all for SJ is great. I think, though, that calling ignorant people assholes and dickwads is going too far. Really, all it takes to make your point is, Hey, did you know that the word XYZ could be hurtful to people? Here's why. Because honestly, most people don't know.

However, going onto someone's post where they said, "Well that movie was lame", and saying,

YOU ARE SUCH A DICK I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU SAID THAT WOW YOU SHOULD END IT RIGHT NOW BECAUSE YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT ANYONE BUT YOURSELF blah blah blah just leads to a lot of confusion and hurt where there didn't need to be any.

Kind of like the feminists who preach women > men instead of women = men. They have some points-- we should be equal. But at the same time, going around and calling people douchebags and horrible people because they choose to be a SAHM is just evil.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
Could you provide examples of feminists who preach women > men? I'm curious.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously, I hear tale after tale of these mysterious feminists who think women deserve more rights than men, etc. etc., but I have NEVER, not once, in more than five years of activism, seen a credible example of someone who actually believed that. The stories do tend to come from MRA or anti-feminist misogynist types, though.

Oh, they exist. The problem is that often they seem so stupid your first instinct is to assume troll. and I'm sure some of them are just that!

Some aren't though. it can be very hard to tell. Poe's law and all that.

I don't know if it's quite "women are better than men," but when I side-eye some feminists, it's because of shit like this:

http://xtan.wordpress.com/2008/06/23/knew-it/

That is a minority of feminists, yes, but even in the communities I was in people spent more time than I was entirely comfy with trying to respect extremists' POV, and that got old.

Thankfully I haven't heard from crowds like that since around '08 or so. I don't know if they went quiet or if I just finally stopped paying attention (to all of online feminism, because any time I did people would get distracted by extremists all over again.) They may have had their day in the sun and online feminists may be generally saner thanks to them STFUing. I don't know. I just know people like that, and people who aren't that bad but have the same general attitude, are exhausting.

I actually saw a forum a few months ago where the desirability of finding a technological way to eliminate men entirely, or cutting their numbers down to a tiny fraction of the population, appeared to be under absolutely serious discussion, and where the prevailing opinion was that men are inherently evil and that mainstream feminism was the refuge of the weak.

It's possible, of course, that the whole thing was an elaborate hoax or parody, but it was a pretty big site that looked like it had been there for a while, and when I poked around looking for a 'This isn't real folks, don't take it seriously!' page I couldn't find any evidence that it wasn't legit.

I'm very sorry I don't have a link; it disturbed me so much I actually went out of my way to make sure I never saw it again.

Well, gee, I'm a 40-year-old feminist and didn't have Internet access until I was 25, and I knew of women like that out in the real world before then. Does that count?

You don't know something personally, so it doesn't exist. Works for Santa Claus, maybe, not so much for human psychology. Extremists exist in any movement, when you have 7 billion people on the planet.

Jesus, I remember that blow-up!

There are also more subtle cases all throughout that community. If a man says anything about women's issues, it's all "Sit down and shut-up, you evil penis-haver!" instead of reasonable discussion.

You're wrong, and you're an idiot. That has nothing to do with women thinking women are better than men or should be more important than men. That has to do with acknowledging that women are raped FAR, far more than men, and that women have been the ones to provide resources for other women. It is about objecting to men putting the focus on themselves at the expense of women and objecting to men putting the onus on women to provide support for male rape while they refuse to support resources for the rape of women, let alone men.

I have a friend who is quite an adamant feminist, and she gets insulted and told off by other feminists all the time because she talks about intersectionality (because she's half-black as well) at the same time as misogyny, and they think that she's being brainwashed and say she's "not progressive enough" (among the many other vile and vitriolic things they've said to her even though she believes the same thing they believe).

not women > men for me, per say, but i have heard shitloads of transphobia from people who claim to be radical feminists

mtf trans people are just by-products of a misogynistic culture, apparently. oh and gender dysphoria doesn't exist. and you need a vagina to be a woman but HOW DARE YOU SUGGEST THAT A WOMAN IS JUST A VAGINA!!!

so yeah not quite the examples you're looking for, maybe, but still the kinda counter-productive stuff that leaves a bad taste in my mouth

I'm not sure if this counts as what lyndis above was trying to say, but probably.. I don't know, 6-12 months ago on some LiveJournal community, there was an argument that started out about being Disney princesses (or something to that effect) and ended with one of the feminists included in the argument LITERALLY saying that she thought that all men everywhere should be subjected to rape because their mere EXISTENCE was responsible for the suffering for all women, and that whether or not they had done anything wrong, they have hurt women metaphorically just for being born with a penis. And so because of this, she thought that all men, regardless of whether or not they'd ever done anything wrong, should be subjected to rape so that they know what it's like and what awful things they're doing to women just by existing.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of so-called "SJWs" (I hate that term so hard, as it only exists to shame and denigrate people who are pro-social justice and anti-bigotry) are marginalized and discriminated against groups, and for a lot of those people, seeing one more slur, seeing one more asshole comment is going to be the last straw. It should not be their responsibility to stay calm and educate people on how they're being bigots -- the responsibility to not be bigots rests with the other party.

So yeah, when someone says "I fucking hate woman characters on TV!" or "that fucking b*tch had it coming," or "I'm gonna use the word f*g and I'm proud of that!" I'm not going to sit there and nicely explain why f*g is an offensive slur or why the people in examples one and two are being sexist. I'm going to call them on being the ignorant assholes they are. It is not my JOB, as a marginalized person, to explain their bigotry to them in nice terms.

If it makes me an "SJW" that I think sometimes it's more important for a marginalized person to feel better by calling a bigot an asshole (being a bigot is being an asshole), then you know what? I'm okay with that.

If you want to feel better by calling someone an asshole, then say that you want to call someone an asshole. Don't disguise it under the excuse that you're doing it "for social justice." You're only venting. You might consider your venting justified, and to many people it would be - someone calls you a fag, you call them an asshole.

It's the part where they claim they're doing it for a higher cause that smacks of hypocrisy.

It should not be their responsibility to stay calm and educate people on how they're being bigots

Why do you have such a problem with telling someone why you take issue with what they say? Telling someone who is genuinely confused "you're a bigot!" and such without letting them know why just sounds like someone on the verge of a tantrum or someone trying to be a bully.

Such is the way of a SJW, though.

A lot of so called SJWs are big on painting themselves as the victim and ignoring their own victimizing behavior.

No SJW isn't shaming people who are anti-bigortry and pro-social justice. It's shaming the turds who use their cause as a weapon to hurt people, including the very minority groups that they are supposedly supporting.

The fact that you can't tell that there's a difference suggests you are probably part of the problem. SJWs like to think that the only people who make a difference are those who pile drive and insult others, but you know what, you aren't that special. Fandom was policing itself and calling out real sexism for a long time before this whole SJW movement showed up.

That's not what a SJW is though. They may get called social justice warriors, but that's wrong. It's not about people being angry and fed up, it's about people who approach social justice from a self-satisfying standpoint and usually end up betraying their own beliefs to stroke their own egos.

I think a lot of people have a problem with social justice culture not because it's calling out bigotry, but because it's become super insular and because a lot of it has strayed away from "let's fight prejudice" into "how can I be right on the internet?"

The problems I've personally had with it are:
* Turning people with good ideas into public figures that cannot ever be wrong
* No real acknowledgment that it's possible to go too far (death threats against more moderate SJers, for example- not even people saying bigoted things, but people taking issue with what's said to be the correct representation of their own group)
* Creating a hierarchy where someone's worth is measured by how non-privileged they are, and privilege itself is a reason to tear someone down instead of just a thing that should be minimized
* Which leads to appropriating oppression in an attempt to be the most oppressed (see all the debates about whether heteroromantic asexuals are queer) and minimizing the oppression that others face ("It doesn't matter if you're oppressed for being X, because I'm oppressed for being Y and you're not", which is a really flawed approach to intersectionality)
* Treating social justice as a monolith, where actual actions take a backseat to knowing the "correct" vocabulary and participating in the "correct" way
* Allies taking over causes and policing members of the actual marginalized group
* Minimal room for reasonable dissent among members of the actual marginalized group

I realize not everyone involved in social justice does these things, but I've seen it so much that I'm no longer involved in it as a community.

There are reasons to criticize something besides "it is totally right and I am very uncomfortable w/ that."

I'm a member of more than a few marginalized groups (and one of these days I expect I'll have to do a youtube video to "prove" it). Here's the way I personally approach it. Not saying you have to, but here's mine, since we're sharing:

I know what it's like to feel bad. I don't want to make anyone feel that way because it's not a good feeling.

I was beginning to wonder if there was going to be a voice of reason in this discussion. Thank you.

Actually, SJW doesn't refer to people who care about social justice; it refers to people who use SJ issues as a tool to cover up their own desire to be a self-righteous asshat (and can end up doing more harm than good for their issue too).

SJW exists to shame people who twist a good issue and use it for selfish reasons.
