Could you provide examples of feminists who preach women > men? I'm curious.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously, I hear tale after tale of these mysterious feminists who think women deserve more rights than men, etc. etc., but I have NEVER, not once, in more than five years of activism, seen a credible example of someone who actually believed that. The stories do tend to come from MRA or anti-feminist misogynist types, though.

Oh, they exist. The problem is that often they seem so stupid your first instinct is to assume troll. and I'm sure some of them are just that!

Some aren't though. it can be very hard to tell. Poe's law and all that.

And the point has been demonstrated!

"I've never seen an example of that, and that means it doesn't exist!"

"Here is an example of that."

"No, something like that can't really exist, and that means that is not an example of that!"

Let's face it - there's dickwads all over the place. Why accept that ridiculously chauvinist male dickwads exist but insist that ridiculously chauvinist female dickwads must be trolls?

I don't know if it's quite "women are better than men," but when I side-eye some feminists, it's because of shit like this:

http://xtan.wordpress.com/2008/06/23/knew-it/

That is a minority of feminists, yes, but even in the communities I was in people spent more time than I was entirely comfy with trying to respect extremists' POV, and that got old.

Thankfully I haven't heard from crowds like that since around '08 or so. I don't know if they went quiet or if I just finally stopped paying attention (to all of online feminism, because any time I did people would get distracted by extremists all over again.) They may have had their day in the sun and online feminists may be generally saner thanks to them STFUing. I don't know. I just know people like that, and people who aren't that bad but have the same general attitude, are exhausting.

I actually saw a forum a few months ago where the desirability of finding a technological way to eliminate men entirely, or cutting their numbers down to a tiny fraction of the population, appeared to be under absolutely serious discussion, and where the prevailing opinion was that men are inherently evil and that mainstream feminism was the refuge of the weak.

It's possible, of course, that the whole thing was an elaborate hoax or parody, but it was a pretty big site that looked like it had been there for a while, and when I poked around looking for a 'This isn't real folks, don't take it seriously!' page I couldn't find any evidence that it wasn't legit.

I'm very sorry I don't have a link; it disturbed me so much I actually went out of my way to make sure I never saw it again.

Well, gee, I'm a 40-year-old feminist and didn't have Internet access until I was 25, and I knew of women like that out in the real world before then. Does that count?

You don't know something personally, so it doesn't exist. Works for Santa Claus, maybe, not so much for human psychology. Extremists exist in any movement, when you have 7 billion people on the planet.

A pretty disgusting one at that.

Jesus, I remember that blow-up!

There are also more subtle cases all throughout that community. If a man says anything about women's issues, it's all "Sit down and shut-up, you evil penis-haver!" instead of reasonable discussion.

Re: Here is one

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
The reason they say that isn't because they're OMG EVIL WOMAN-SUPREMACISTS.

It's because men shouldn't be the dominant voices in women's issues and shouldn't be allowed to speak over women about sexism and their experiences as women.

You're a moron.

You're a moron.

And apparently you're a judgmental asshole. (Yeah, hypocrisy is me. I just couldn't resist.)

You're wrong, and you're an idiot. That has nothing to do with women thinking women are better than men or should be more important than men. That has to do with acknowledging that women are raped FAR, far more than men, and that women have been the ones to provide resources for other women. It is about objecting to men putting the focus on themselves at the expense of women and objecting to men putting the onus on women to provide support for male rape while they refuse to support resources for the rape of women, let alone men.

The article was about male victims of rape. Are you suggesting that plight of male rape victims should be ignored because they aren't women? Because that's sure the hell what it sounds like you are saying.

I have a friend who is quite an adamant feminist, and she gets insulted and told off by other feminists all the time because she talks about intersectionality (because she's half-black as well) at the same time as misogyny, and they think that she's being brainwashed and say she's "not progressive enough" (among the many other vile and vitriolic things they've said to her even though she believes the same thing they believe).

Wow. Reading the comments, I see a good bit of "women are only obligated to help women, and men should just help themselves!" but I bet if any men started an organization that ONLY helped male rape victims there would be a fucking shitstorm about how sexist that is. And no one is specifically calling out men for not helping female victims, which is also a problem, but instead it's been treated as the natural order of things - of course only women would help women, which is why men need to fuck off and help themselves.

Or how about PEOPLE helping PEOPLE, eh? Why is this so hard?

Re: Here is one

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
So LGBT organizations need to provide resources for straight people? Minority organizations need to provide resources for white people?

These organizations focus on the oppressed groups because the oppressed need extra help in our society. And with the issue of rape, a safe space from the opposite sex can be useful and sometimes a necessity.

not women > men for me, per say, but i have heard shitloads of transphobia from people who claim to be radical feminists

mtf trans people are just by-products of a misogynistic culture, apparently. oh and gender dysphoria doesn't exist. and you need a vagina to be a woman but HOW DARE YOU SUGGEST THAT A WOMAN IS JUST A VAGINA!!!

so yeah not quite the examples you're looking for, maybe, but still the kinda counter-productive stuff that leaves a bad taste in my mouth

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
Or, in reverse, to say that trans* persons of the FtM variety are "traitors to womanhood" or whatever. I've never had it said to my face, but I know other transdudes who have.

I'm not sure if this counts as what lyndis above was trying to say, but probably.. I don't know, 6-12 months ago on some LiveJournal community, there was an argument that started out about being Disney princesses (or something to that effect) and ended with one of the feminists included in the argument LITERALLY saying that she thought that all men everywhere should be subjected to rape because their mere EXISTENCE was responsible for the suffering for all women, and that whether or not they had done anything wrong, they have hurt women metaphorically just for being born with a penis. And so because of this, she thought that all men, regardless of whether or not they'd ever done anything wrong, should be subjected to rape so that they know what it's like and what awful things they're doing to women just by existing.
