A pretty disgusting one at that.

Jesus, I remember that blow-up!

There are also more subtle cases all throughout that community. If a man says anything about women's issues, it's all "Sit down and shut-up, you evil penis-haver!" instead of reasonable discussion.

Re: Here is one

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
The reason they say that isn't because they're OMG EVIL WOMAN-SUPREMACISTS.

It's because men shouldn't be the dominant voices in women's issues and shouldn't be allowed to speak over women about sexism and their experiences as women.

You're a moron.

Re: Here is one

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
You're a moron.

And apparently you're a judgmental asshole. (Yeah, hypocrisy is me. I just couldn't resist.)

Way to prove the point about Social Justice Warriors vs. people who believe in social justice. This comment would have been an entirely reasonable response to someone who didn't already know what you said in it, but you just had to go and throw in a personal insult at the end, making your post go from reasonable, polite discourse to actively trying to pick a fight. Nice.

You are part of the problem.

(Also, isn't "moron" one of those oh-so-evil ableist words that SJW-types get all up in arms about people using?)

You really (http://birdofparadox.wordpress.com/derailing-for-dummies-google-cache-reconstruction/#notlistening) really (http://birdofparadox.wordpress.com/derailing-for-dummies-google-cache-reconstruction/#angry) love derailing, don't you? Congratulations, you know how to link to Derailing For Dummies! That's totally as good as formulating your own responses to people.

But seriously, though. If you end a post with a straight-up insult, you don't want a debate. You don't want to educate someone. You don't want to approach problems in a rational, adult manner. No, when you insult a stranger out of hand for saying something you don't agree with, what you want is a fight. Which makes you the problem, much more than the person whose opinion you disagree with.

And since I don't particularly want a fight right now, I'll let you have the last word so you can feel like you've somehow won a great victory for women's rights. Have fun!

+1 The automatic fight-picking drives me absolutely up the wall with these kinds of people. Could it be ny more self-righteous?

lol whatever you say.

Re: Here is one

Say, did you know using the word "moron" as a term of abuse is hateful and oppressive of people with learning disabilities? Including women?

Re: Here is one

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
whoa

you didn't really imply women have learning disabilities as an innate part of being a woman

right

wait no you're anon you're probably shit-stirring because this secret's spawned sjw wank and you want to join in

Diff Anon

Except that's not derailing. You are literally doing EXACTLY what the people up thread are complaining about.

Abelist terminology is not appropriate.

Re: Here is one

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
Of course they shouldn't be allowed to speak over women or be the dominant voices. That doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed to speak or have voices AT ALL.

I don't know if you'll ever see this, anon, and I seriously doubt you'd respond if you did, but I respectfully ask you to look at your comment. It's rational. It explains something. It educates. Is that something you want to do?

If it is, then that part of your comment is constructive.

What, then, is the benefit of adding the last line? Ask yourself, what does it do for the cause and the greater good to belittle someone? What do I hope it will accomplish? What do I expect the person on the other side of the computer to do when I call them a moron? Do I expect them to change their minds? Insult me back? Change their behavior? What do I want them to do, not just now, but after this?

Is it because I feel that the person is being hurtful? If I feel that, then why do I want to mimic such hurtfulness? Am I not trying to show people that it's not acceptable to be hurtful?

This comment, by the way, isn't meant to say "you're a bad person". It's because (like most of the people in the thread) you believe in the right cause, but you might not realize what an impact delivery has.

You're wrong, and you're an idiot. That has nothing to do with women thinking women are better than men or should be more important than men. That has to do with acknowledging that women are raped FAR, far more than men, and that women have been the ones to provide resources for other women. It is about objecting to men putting the focus on themselves at the expense of women and objecting to men putting the onus on women to provide support for male rape while they refuse to support resources for the rape of women, let alone men.

Re: Here is one

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 02:25 am (UTC)(link)

The article was about male victims of rape. Are you suggesting that plight of male rape victims should be ignored because they aren't women? Because that's sure the hell what it sounds like you are saying.

Re: Here is one

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
No, that is not what I'm saying.

The article was about male rape, yes. But it was also about how women supposedly have a responsibility to provide resources for victims of male rape even when it directly contradicts the interests of female rape victims. This is wrong. The comments were addressing that.

Tangent, but this makes me think of a good instance of someone upthread saying "nah, I don't believe those extremist man-haters also calling themselves 'feminists' exist" - I've seen women who insist men can't be raped.

/headscratch

I have a friend who is quite an adamant feminist, and she gets insulted and told off by other feminists all the time because she talks about intersectionality (because she's half-black as well) at the same time as misogyny, and they think that she's being brainwashed and say she's "not progressive enough" (among the many other vile and vitriolic things they've said to her even though she believes the same thing they believe).

ONTD_P is a cesspool of the SJW cult. I bet I could go there and look at the first post there right now, and I'll find Oppression Olympics.

Re: Here is one

[personal profile] diet_poison 2012-06-10 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. Reading the comments, I see a good bit of "women are only obligated to help women, and men should just help themselves!" but I bet if any men started an organization that ONLY helped male rape victims there would be a fucking shitstorm about how sexist that is. And no one is specifically calling out men for not helping female victims, which is also a problem, but instead it's been treated as the natural order of things - of course only women would help women, which is why men need to fuck off and help themselves.

Or how about PEOPLE helping PEOPLE, eh? Why is this so hard?

Re: Here is one

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 06:46 pm (UTC)(link)
So LGBT organizations need to provide resources for straight people? Minority organizations need to provide resources for white people?

These organizations focus on the oppressed groups because the oppressed need extra help in our society. And with the issue of rape, a safe space from the opposite sex can be useful and sometimes a necessity.

Re: Here is one

(Anonymous) 2012-06-11 11:58 am (UTC)(link)
The difference is that "LGBT organizations" and "minority organizations" typically exist to make sure minorities get access to resources that majorities have no trouble getting access to.

That is not the case here.

The "safe space" issue is a red herring; no one said that an organization which provided help for rape victims both male and female would be expected to do so in mixed-gender groups. The issue is whether an organization which exists in response to a particular kind of traumatic assault is justified in neglecting victims of that assault who need that help and don't have anywhere else to turn for it, just because those victims are male.
