(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 06:24 am (UTC)(link)The problems I've personally had with it are:
* Turning people with good ideas into public figures that cannot ever be wrong
* No real acknowledgment that it's possible to go too far (death threats against more moderate SJers, for example- not even people saying bigoted things, but people taking issue with what's said to be the correct representation of their own group)
* Creating a hierarchy where someone's worth is measured by how non-privileged they are, and privilege itself is a reason to tear someone down instead of just a thing that should be minimized
* Which leads to appropriating oppression in an attempt to be the most oppressed (see all the debates about whether heteroromantic asexuals are queer) and minimizing the oppression that others face ("It doesn't matter if you're oppressed for being X, because I'm oppressed for being Y and you're not", which is a really flawed approach to intersectionality)
* Treating social justice as a monolith, where actual actions take a backseat to knowing the "correct" vocabulary and participating in the "correct" way
* Allies taking over causes and policing members of the actual marginalized group
* Minimal room for reasonable dissent among members of the actual marginalized group
I realize not everyone involved in social justice does these things, but I've seen it so much that I'm no longer involved in it as a community.
There are reasons to criticize something besides "it is totally right and I am very uncomfortable w/ that."

are huuuuuge fucking problems, and thank you very much for bringing them up. There have been a lot of times (in my personal experience) where I've seen SJWs insulting and berating minorities (particularly LGBTs) who dissent from the "popular" or "acceptable" opinion that they have deemed that real, standard minorities from that group should have. And if their opinion is different from the standard line (because apparently all members of a specific minority are exactly the same person), then clearly they are just self-hating closeted bigots who have internalized their _________-ism.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)You make some very good points. I disagree strongly with others (calling people on their privilege is important, especially when they try to talk over members of minority groups!), but most of them I agree with.
However, those problems are, as you said, issues of social justice culture and they must be overcome. Many reasonable members of that culture and community are working towards fixing those issues.
That does not make it okay to label pro-social justice individuals as "SJWs," a shaming tool meant to silence and erase the voices of minority individuals. Calling them out on the issues they may have -- fine. Calling them labels created to silence them and appease bigots because they dared to "get angry" or be vocally pro-social justice, designed to keep them quiet so that bigots can keep on being bigots with impunity... not okay.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)You say that SJWs don't exist and that it's only used as a label by bigots to silence social justice advocates.
Many people have chimed in to explain what they consider a SJW and how their behavior is different than people who are real social justice advocates.
You continue to say that the term SJW is only used by bigots.
You've just called everybody on this thread who used that term a bigot as a means to shame and silence them. People who are pro-social justice, people how are members of the marginalized group you claim to be defending (and, yes, probably a few real bigots thrown in, I'll give you that).
Just because they used a term you didn't like they're bigots.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-11 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)1) Do you acknowledge that BSJAs exist? That people can be committed to social justice causes and be trying to push those causes forward, but can do so in ways that their actual effect is to harm those causes?
2) Do you recognize that the problematic behavior that we have identified as the defining characteristic of a BSJA is exactly the behavior that many people are complaining about from people they call SJWs?
3) What is your basis for insisting that of the people who use the term SJW and complain about the behavior of SJWs, 0% are rational, ordinary people, even people who care about social justice, getting frustrated with behavior that harms social justice causes, and 100% of them are bigots who are trying to silence minority voices?
