8. Cho's name is supposed to name "butterfly", right? Isn't it supposed to be all pretty? That and doesn't HP's story start in the late 1980's so maybe the characters had very typical names? From the way I've read the first two or three books, that is.

But I get what you mean. :/ Parvati Patil lolol. It's "Patel", if that's what Rowling was aiming for.

13. I could never get into Hikaru no Go but since when does opinion = secret? O_o

14. Honestly, the only reason I sort of liked GS was because of the kickass music and discovering my favorite band ever from GSD. I wasn't fond of Kira, either...

19. RUROUNI KENSHIN. I need to read all my doujinshi of that NOW.

22. Uh, Hinamori is not an angst fest lol.

You're thinking of Japanese, dear, and the romaji isn't enough to tell what characters her name could be. Cho Chang can be hundreds of possible combinations, but a name like that is the "Mary Sue" of Chinese. Still, in a world where people are named Mundungus (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Mundungus), or Grubblyplank and not be laughed at, such names can't be taken seriously.

[identity profile] rayiroth.livejournal.com 2007-07-23 12:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I believe it's "Autumn", as the Chinese version of her name was 张秋. How on earth did that end up as a Mary Sue name is beyond me.

Patil is a pretty common name too.

[identity profile] the-angelic-sin.livejournal.com 2007-07-20 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was just about to say... I've met two people with that name this summer alone.

[identity profile] cephiedvariable.livejournal.com 2007-07-20 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Parvati Patil lolol. It's "Patel"

Uhhh, Patil is totally a valid Indian last name. I say this on the authority of my best friend growing up being Indian and, incidentally, having the last name 'Patil'.

[identity profile] halevy.livejournal.com 2007-07-20 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
It... is?!

I'm Indian myself and I know "Patel" is a Gujurati name (I'm Punjabi) but I really had no idea "Patil" was valid. Maybe because all the 100 Patels I went to school with spelled their last name "Patel". Unless in the UK it's "Patil"?

[identity profile] cephiedvariable.livejournal.com 2007-07-20 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm Canadian. Which is kind of like the UK I guess?

I admit that I probably know less than you, but her dad said it was a fairly popular name in India so it's probably just different romanization.

[identity profile] chelonianmobile.livejournal.com 2007-07-20 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I've met multiple Patel families, and I'm in Britain, but that doesn't invalidate "Patil". I think it's kinda like the difference between Smith and Smythe, except I don't think either Patil or Patel is as ridiculously pretentious as "Smythe". I don't know the language, so don't take my word for it, I'm just guessing.

Anyone ever think that maybe Rowling gave the characters names like that because, well ... PEOPLE DO HAVE NAMES LIKE THAT? Hell, for all we know, Cho might be white and have really ignorant whatever-the-Chinese-ish-equivalent-of-Wapanese-is parents ... nah, born two decades too early, wasn't she?
