I feel the same. Most of it is loss of interest, but there's another part where I feel like I'm no longer welcomed. =(

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

I'm growing out of fandom myself. I also think I'm just finding myself growing exhausted by it, particularly in one fandom group since I've been a part of it for so many years and this sudden interest in it is so overwhelming.

It also doesn't help that some (not ALL) fans can just be so aggravating by being so particularly choosy over certain things. It's this close-mindedness that's getting to me that's so very high school. I can't do it anymore.

Eh, I thought so too, not to long ago, then I found another one.

And even if you do, it's not bad, Things change, your taste, your hobbies; your preferences are all susceptible to change as time passes. Don't be scared, ride it out until you can't find it in you anymore and have a tearful, happy goodbye.

You could be growing out of it, or you could be growing out of one fandom in particular, or you could just be fading for a while. *shrugs* I've faded out of fandoms for months at a time, I just take a hiatus and come back later when I feel it again.
You don't ever age out of fandom or anything; you can get bored, but if you really wanna keep in fandom, may I suggest finding a new show/movie/book/whatever to enjoy?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
if you do, you do; if you don't, you don't

just go with the flow of life and enjoy the ride

who knows what new lands you might find

I completely feel the same way, OP. The people in my now-main fandom are far younger than me (teenagers whilst I'm in my thirties) and it just doesn't feel the same anymore. Which is fine. As someone else said, that's just the ebb and flow of life. And it's always scary to realize you're losing something, but it's been my experience that you'll find something else -- whether it be another fandom or something in real life -- to replace it. Being stagnant is my biggest life fear, so I always see moving on and forward as an opportunity rather than a loss. I hope you find that as well.

This. I started out in my fandom at thirteen, and now that I'm in my twenties and a new flock of teenagers have joined the fandom, fandom doesn't feel the same anymore. It's a part of growing up, though, and your optimism on the matter is welcoming. Thank you.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
It's ok. Just let it be because something else will take its place. And it will be something just as good as fandom was because nothing will ever replace it.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
i did a long time ago. i miss it sometimes because i made some great friends in it, but at the same time i cba to get back into it whatsoever. the only reason it sucks is because being in fandom was the reason i wrote, and since then i've barely written anything :/

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
It's okay, OP, it's a pretty common side effect of getting older. Even if our interests don't change, we do generally get more responsibilities or other things to fill up our lives, and before you know it, being hip deep in fandom activity isn't always possible anymore.

I felt like that for a long time, but then I found myself fangirling over entirely different things and fell right back into it lol
So maybe your interests are just changing and you need to find a new fandom; or maybe you ARE losing interest in fandom in general, but it's not like that's so bad.

I drifted out of fandom for five years at one point and then came back when I needed to be there again. It's no big deal.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-09 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I sometimes feel like that too because in my current fandom I'm a lot more interested in meta and discussions than in shipping or silly jokes and most of the fandom seems only interested in shipping and silly jokes. That made me feel 'too old' for fandom, but then I found some other fans who liked the same things as me and now it's just as much fun as before. Maybe you just need to find a different fandom or different people to talk about fandom? Something calmer, with less childish drama and wank?

It's possible - sometimes that happens. Sometimes you leave for a little while and then come back with a different perspective. Some people drift out of one fandom but then drift into another. I wouldn't sweat it - if you find yourself missing it, you can always dip your toes back in.

I don't think it's "growing out" as in you'll never enjoy any fandom again or because fandom is a matter of maturity. I think that you might be oversatiated with the fandom you are in. And that happens sometimes.

With me first I noticed that my own writing stopped. I just couldn't find any inspiration anymore and writing became a chore. Then I stopped reading fic. Even when I didn't have to put any energy into it it just didn't grab me emotionally the way it used to. Eventually I had to acknowlege I'd become burnt out on my first fandom. I tried looking at other fandoms but they didn't inspire me either. So I took a break from fandom and wrote an original novel. And that was fun.

And then one day I watched a show that gave me the same kind of excitement I felt as the first time I watched my first fandom's show. I started to write fic again. I was inspired. And boom, back into fandom with a vengence.

Not saying this will happen to you, but know that just because your interest is dying now doesn't mean it will stay dead forever.

Original Novel = Undesirable? +1001

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Meh, it happens. Or it could be that you're tired of a certain group in a fandom, or you're tired of the fandom itself.

If it happens, it happens. You'll no doubt find something to replace it if you fall out of it.

Me too, anon, me too.

I just started shipping a new pairing / in a new fandom and went for the fic and it's all OOC dreck. And I think I would have liked this back in the day, too :(

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 08:43 am (UTC)(link)
...Yeah, me too. The fic writers are mostly either imaginative but horrible at grammar and whiny towards critique, or are good with syntax but have hampered themselves with so many ridiculous fandom enforced writing rules that it's all unoriginal.

And everybody else just kinda whines about social justice, somehow thinking they can solve people getting treated like crap by treating people like crap.

Yes, I kind of have too. I have a fandom-related username on lj (pimpmytardis), but as I've mostly drifted away from posting there and especially not being active at all in the Doctor Who fandom I'm kind of glad my dreamwidth and tumblr are both non-fandom names. (They both come from Al Stewart songs, which I'll never outgrow.)
