I obsessively loved this series when I was a kid.
(I always remember disliking the mice though, they were just so vanilla and boring)

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I agree so much. I used to want to live there so badly when I was a child, to be a warrior protecting the peaceful woodlanders, to steal cheese from the kitchen. Even though I think the later books are awful, the first five are still incredibly brilliant... and now I'm getting sniffly. Thanks for this post.

REDWALL SECRET, FUCK YES.

Talk about my childhood distilled, anon. I just. Aahh so much love! The series also spawned my first ever fanfic, which was totally a crossover between Redwall and Discworld (yeah I don't even) written in reporters' notepads haha. It was so bad. Bless past!me. *ruffles past!me's hair*

I was so into these books when I was at school ♥. I remember it being one of the things I looked up when I first got the internet too, so it was kind of like my first online fandom? All those Geocities sites, heh. Nostalgia~

Oh man, that was me all the way. After the dial-up modem got set up and I figured out what Google was, Redwall was like the first thing I started looking up sites for.

REDWALLLLLL!

God, I love HP, but Redwall will always truly be my childhood. I think I cried for a week when I heard Jacques had died.

“Give us dinner every eve,
Or we’ll pack our bags and leave.
Where we’ll go to we don’t know,
Up the path a league or so.
If we don’t find comfort there,
Back to Redwall we’ll repair.
We’ll eat pudden, pie, and cake,
All the Abbey cooks can bake!”

OMG, who are you, OP?!?! I DO NOT know enough fans of this series!! These books pretty much defined my childhood; I first read Mossflower when I was 11 or 12 (I'm 28). I love them to death (I also happen to own the majority of them in hardcover) and they still hold a very special place in my heart-- there's an intense sort of nostalgia that I equate with these stories. They were pure magic to me. I've never read the Harry Potter series, nor have I read any of the other series that are really popular nowadays in YA fiction. It's probably shitty of me to think this, but part of me feels as if they could never be as good!

It's really awesome to see a Redwall FS :)

I'm still so in love with this series! Best animal series I've ever read.

REDWALL SECRET

Don't get me wrong, I like Harry Potter and I love Lord of the Rings, but Redwall was my childhood in a way neither HP nor LotR ever were. ♥

That's because Redwall was awesome, although you know, you could hold more than one thing as being awesome in your head at one time.

I haven't gotten to read all of the books, like 75% of them, but when I get my own place with my own bookcase I am buying all of them (and Discworld series) to put up prominently and idgaf.

I will say that I never wanted to be in Redwall, because it seemed to me far more dangerous than any other world I'd read. I wanted all of their food though. All of it. I always appreciate a book with good food descriptions.

REEEEDWAAAALLLLL!

Sorry, there is nothing else in the world that can get me fangirling like this book series can. I say with pride that it really helped define my life and values from the ages of about nine or ten onwards. Even my handle, Lightshade, came from the first RP character I ever made, a super, overpowered, very speschul snowflake wildcat. Ah, memories.

Also, I completely blame Taggerung for my love of tribal and facial tats.

YESS REDWALL!!!!

So happy to read a Redwall secret! This series will always be cherished from my childhood. I still have the books with their golden spines sitting on my shelf! My all time favourite was The Taggerung. Made me cry buckets. Also, Mariel of Redwall and The Bellmaker sits second with the best action/adventure and kickass heroine mouse imo. WOT WOT!

I hated HP, couldn't get through LotR, BUT REDWALL FUCK YES. I read the first book when I was 6 and was hooked. They were the only books I would read for so long; I had to put a moratorium on it eventually because I knew every single little thing that was going to happen in every single book.

Man I need to head out and pick up the last few books I haven't read. And also reread them all from the beginning (I have them chronologically arranged on my bookshelf, ugh I'm looking at them right now and they're so beautiful).

Man I just wanted to be an otter living in the Abbey so freaking badly.

Redwall secret!! *flail excitedly*

These books are my life. When everyone else was reading HP or Twilight, I was reading Redwall. Although it saddens me that there will be no more books (unless one or both of Brian's sons decide to continue the series). Regardless, I am a *huge* fan. My very first fanfiction piece took place in the Redwall world, and I credit the series for my love of weaponry. Brian was such a spectacular author; the way he describes the feasts always makes my mouth water. It's been over a year and I'm still struggling to accept his passing, but at least he's now in his beloved Abbey.

"I will lay a place at our table for you and hope you can join us, if not in body, then in the world of your imagination, where you can visit us any time."

I read these books in elementary school, which was a few years before I was introduced to harry potter. I continued to re-read them through high school and college, they never get old.

I LOVE Redwall! And, I have a bit of a secret myself. I used to ship Rufe Brush/Durry Quill. *ashamed*

[identity profile] aunt-zelda.livejournal.com 2012-06-11 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
I LOVED those books in elementary and middle school. Once, I checked out about twenty of them from the library, cleared a whole shelf all by myself, because I was going on a long road trip with my dad to visit his side of the family for Thanksgiving. I cleared the shelf again, later, when a new book came out, to refresh my memory. Thank goodness there was no limit at my library on how many books you could check out at once!

(Anonymous) 2012-06-11 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
I LOVED these books when I was a kid. As an adult it's been harder to read them, mostly because I didn't like how black and white the different species were. If you were a weasel, a fox, a rat or any other type of vermin you were inherently bad. If you were an otter, a mouse, a mole, or a hare you were inherently good. I really wished he had made the alignments a little more gray because then it would have been AMAZING.

The books still hold a special place in my heart though. Especially Salamanstron (omg sp) and Martin the Warrior. ESPECIALLY Martin the Warrior.

oh I loved Redwall SO MUCH. I think I read the first 5 books like ten times (local library didn't have all the books) over the years. Have you ever tried reading the Mistmantle Chronicles?

^_^ I loved Redwall as a kid! And recently reread a couple of them. They're so much fun!
