Even worse when they start telling you that they won't release the next chapter until they get 50 reviews or something..Like seriously, are you that needy?

This is a sure way to loose many readers. I just imagined a published author saying he won't release the next book until x copies were sold...

To be fair, that does happen, but it's usually the publisher and not the author setting the quota. Unless you're Piers Anthony, who said he wouldn't write any more of the Ilse of Woman books because the Xanth books sold better and took less research.

(But in the online world it's just needy and arrogant.)

That really sucks of the publishers but it's a business for them, it makes sense to decide that you only get to publish more if your books sell often enough. Still sucks.

Didn't Patterson just pull that stunt? "X copies of this book have to be sold or I'll kill Alex Cross in the next one!" I swear I saw that in a commercial.

Ha! I did see it! *victory dance*

I really, really hope this is a joke o.O

Yeah, neediness is a big turn-off for me in fandom.
Reading that usually causes me to not even read the fic, or to refrain from commenting.
Thankfully, people who write that sort of conditions in their fic introductions are not good writers usually. So I never encountered the case where I read a chapter, really wanted to read the rest and was torn between my distaste for the attention whoring and interest for the fic.
