Some people are entitled little shits. *shrugs* I like being favorited and kudos'ed. I like actual reviews even more, but I'll take what I can get.

I think they complain about getting a favorite over getting a review.

Still, whenever I write I take what I can get :)

I enjoy reviews as much as the next writer, but I also love feeling like I'm in on some secret if a reader only fav's without commenting. Like only they and I know they liked it enough to favorite it, even if only just to come back to it later.

i just recently started posting stuff on ff.net and for me, the only reason i can see people preferring a review over a favourite is because everyone can see the number of reviews, but only the author can see the number of favourites. so if a story has lots of favourites but only a few reviews, readers might be more likely to pass on reading it I guess, because it looks like people don't like it because there's not a lot of attention on it. that's one thing that's better about ao3 I guess, anyone can see the numbers for both comments and favourites.

It's been ages since I wrote fic (oh, those crappy anime days), but it just wasn't the same.

Don't get me wrong! The fact that there were people reading my stories and liking them enough to add them to their favorites or story alerts was cool, and I appreciated every single fave/alert, but actual reviews? And reviews that went beyond a "I loved it, please write more!"? Those were real gems.

I never (and definitely won't start if I start writing fic again) complained about them, though. That's just bad form and a guarantee to lose readers.

Not to mention that I've been on the other side. Sometimes you just don't know what to say in response to a good story but still liked it. It happens.

And the same people who complain about getting fav complain about kudos.

And that very same people complain about short reviews and about too positive reviews and concrit and... *sigh* Some people just like to complain and aren't happy with anything they get.

Eh. It's not so much with fic but with art for me--I'll always prefer comments. I don't get mad at an unexplained fav (hey, thanks for liking it), but I'd rather a comment. For me, fic and art is just another way of starting a dialogue (one thing I HATE about tumblr is that I can't respond to reblog comments without making a mess). So if I put something out there and it's got a bunch of little stars from folks, but no actual comment...yeah, I might feel a little miffed, but only because it feels like I said something in a crowded room and folks just smiled and nodded, but no one said anything back.

I think tumblr is lending itself toward less commenting now anyway, which is a shame. And I mean that more because I'd like to have conversations with artists whose work I like, the way you can on dA or LJ, but tumblr just isn't conducive to that.

Anyway...

No one is entitled to comments. I won't lie--favs don't register as much for me beyond maybe "that's nice." I don't really look at 'em. But it is still nice that someone liked something I made, whether or not they have anything to say about it.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-11 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
entitled writers are fucking annoying. actually, entitled people in general are fucking annoying. go away all of you.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-11 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
After reading fanfiction for the past 17 years on the net I come to not really care about reviews, and for that matter about getting them. Nor does it really matter whether or not your story is favourited because everyone has their own individual way of using the favourite feature on ff.net. Personally, I use Story Alert to favourite as a way to keep my favs private, jsyk.

I've read fanfiction that I've liked and not commented, and have friends that do the same. I've also read fanfiction that was so so and commented over a scene that happened to pique a comment that I wanted to share. So if you are using reviews as a basis as whether you are a good writer/story teller you might find yourself continually questioning yourself because people have their own way as to go about fanfiction, and you will never get the absolute proof from them.

Some people are elitist fuckers. Honestly, I'm psyched if I get a fave or if someone adds me to their favorite authors list.

I do love reviews so I can get an opinion of what they did and didn't like, but the fact that someone liked it enough to make a note of it in some way, shape, or form (especially if it WAS a favorite story of theirs rather than a bookmarking tool) is still a huge compliment.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-11 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
well shit

I write because I like to. Am I doing it wrong? Should I be whoring myself out for comments?

The anons in this thread are making me question whether the meaning of life is actually comment. damn.

This sort of attitude is one of the things that's kept me a lurker in fandom up until only the last year or so even though I've been reading for more than a decade. I already have major (but improving) social anxiety issues. I don't need people making me feel like even the minor contributions I can't make aren't good enough.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-11 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, I really hate entitled people with a passion. No one owes you anything for your fanfiction. Whether it's a fave or a review, be grateful for what you get.

People who write fanfiction for the attention and the comments are doing it wrong.

I don't mind favorites, really. Hell, considering I'm only part of really microscopic fandoms, I'm always really happy to know that someone is looking at my stuff (mostly drawings, in my case).

What really, really gets to me is those people who systematically favourite EVERY SINGLE THING I post but never bother to leave a single comment. Like, ever. I mean, it makes me wonder if these people are only faving out of habit, and not even because they like what I do.

*sigh* I feel bad for complaining about it though. I know I should just feel lucky that some people even bother looking at my art.

This again.

What happened so far (in past secrets):

People have reasons not to post reviews. Demanding short (Liked it!) reviews over favs is hypocritical. Lots of authors are obviously ungrateful little shits, because their awesome talent is obviously worthy of nothing more than reviews. Readers who only fav are ungrateful because of reasons. Lots of authors feel the need to point out that they prefer reviews but would never complain about favs. Some people simply hate favs because then they can't respond.

Stay tuned.

Discussions like these are interesting since I'm just getting back into reviewing fic I read after several years. I reason I stopped for so long was because I once left a review on a fic I read -- positive and not a "update plz!!1", but not the kind of review the author wanted, so I ended up spending the next six months fielding flaming PMs and emails from the author and her bratty friends. Some people will never be satisfied no matter what.

I really don't understand the "I need comments / reviews" mentality, because simply creating one's own work should be reward enough for the creator. It should be enjoyable enough, that a lack of attention doesn't matter.

This makes absolutely no sense to me.

If lacking attention makes you angry or wanting to refrain from working on your craft, get a more self-fulfilling hobby. Something you can enjoy for the sake of what it is.

Or has the idea of "instant popularity" spoiled kids so much that enjoying something without tons of attention or constant validation for your interests is no longer enough?
