(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)Don't get me wrong! The fact that there were people reading my stories and liking them enough to add them to their favorites or story alerts was cool, and I appreciated every single fave/alert, but actual reviews? And reviews that went beyond a "I loved it, please write more!"? Those were real gems.
I never (and definitely won't start if I start writing fic again) complained about them, though. That's just bad form and a guarantee to lose readers.
Not to mention that I've been on the other side. Sometimes you just don't know what to say in response to a good story but still liked it. It happens.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)And that very same people complain about short reviews and about too positive reviews and concrit and... *sigh* Some people just like to complain and aren't happy with anything they get.

I think tumblr is lending itself toward less commenting now anyway, which is a shame. And I mean that more because I'd like to have conversations with artists whose work I like, the way you can on dA or LJ, but tumblr just isn't conducive to that.
Anyway...
No one is entitled to comments. I won't lie--favs don't register as much for me beyond maybe "that's nice." I don't really look at 'em. But it is still nice that someone liked something I made, whether or not they have anything to say about it.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-11 01:48 am (UTC)(link)I've read fanfiction that I've liked and not commented, and have friends that do the same. I've also read fanfiction that was so so and commented over a scene that happened to pique a comment that I wanted to share. So if you are using reviews as a basis as whether you are a good writer/story teller you might find yourself continually questioning yourself because people have their own way as to go about fanfiction, and you will never get the absolute proof from them.

I do love reviews so I can get an opinion of what they did and didn't like, but the fact that someone liked it enough to make a note of it in some way, shape, or form (especially if it WAS a favorite story of theirs rather than a bookmarking tool) is still a huge compliment.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-11 03:12 am (UTC)(link)I write because I like to. Am I doing it wrong? Should I be whoring myself out for comments?
The anons in this thread are making me question whether the meaning of life is actually comment. damn.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-11 03:39 am (UTC)(link)People who write fanfiction for the attention and the comments are doing it wrong.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-11 03:41 am (UTC)(link)What really, really gets to me is those people who systematically favourite EVERY SINGLE THING I post but never bother to leave a single comment. Like, ever. I mean, it makes me wonder if these people are only faving out of habit, and not even because they like what I do.
*sigh* I feel bad for complaining about it though. I know I should just feel lucky that some people even bother looking at my art.

What happened so far (in past secrets):
People have reasons not to post reviews. Demanding short (Liked it!) reviews over favs is hypocritical. Lots of authors are obviously ungrateful little shits, because their awesome talent is obviously worthy of nothing more than reviews. Readers who only fav are ungrateful because of reasons. Lots of authors feel the need to point out that they prefer reviews but would never complain about favs. Some people simply hate favs because then they can't respond.
Stay tuned.

This makes absolutely no sense to me.
If lacking attention makes you angry or wanting to refrain from working on your craft, get a more self-fulfilling hobby. Something you can enjoy for the sake of what it is.
Or has the idea of "instant popularity" spoiled kids so much that enjoying something without tons of attention or constant validation for your interests is no longer enough?
