I think they complain about getting a favorite over getting a review.

Still, whenever I write I take what I can get :)

People are stupid. People are stupid and ungrateful.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't see how gratitude comes into it. It's not like pressing 'add to favourites' is a great sacrifice for someone to do. Am I supposed to shower the person with gratitude for deigning to take that one second to press a button?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I have read a lot of fis that I loved, but virtually none of them were ever favorited. Usually I just put them in bookmarks on my computer.

So the fact that people do actually favorite stories can mean something. That they bothered to inform you in even that small way means something.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
That they bothered to inform you in even that small way means something.
Yeah, except that no.
A review is meant to inform the author that the reader "bothered" to read the fic and hopefully liked it. A fav is meant to easily find the fic later and is not meant to inform the author of anything; informing the author is just a side effect.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, except no.
A favorite is a way to say "hey, this was really awesome I'm adding it to my favs and letting the author know how much I liked it!" If I just wanted to easily find the fic later I'd bookmark it, way easier.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
it may mean that to you but to a lot of authors it means, "fuck you, I can't be bothered to type a few words but I'm happy to consume your fic."

(Anonymous) 2012-06-11 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
This. One of my 'favorite' excuses being that the reader doesn't have the time to comment. Apparently the reader can spend two hours reading your stuff but can't find two minutes to comment on it. Go figure.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-11 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
YES. I've actually, in non-anon discussions of this, had people who I thought were reasonable get all, "I would comment but that takes away from time I could spend on my own writing." What, really? Even if you only spent ten minutes reading my fic you can take one minute to reply without measurably impacting your own writing time.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-11 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
it may mean that to you but to a lot of commenters it means exactly what I said. authors expect too much. guess I'll just stop all together with any kudos, favorites, etc because god forbid the author doesn't get the specific kind of acknowledgment that's acceptable to them.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-11 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
Authors expect too much? That people take one minute to type a few words is TOO MUCH? DIAF! I think the best thing would be if you would stop reading fic entirely if you think so little of the authors.

Same anon as above.
See? This is why review > favorite. At least with a review there can't be any confusion about what the reader means.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It say even more than that: "hey, this was really awesome I'm adding it to my favs and letting the author and anyone looking my profile know how much I liked it!"

(Anonymous) 2012-06-11 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
And it's sooooo significant when it's lost amidst 100, 200 or 500 other favorites on said profile.

This. Favorites ae mainly for the convenience of readers, not authors. Personally I never add something to my favorites list without also reviewing it, because the two things just aren't the same.

It's an act of communication. As brief as it gets, but it's there.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
This x100

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't see how you get "shower the person with gratitude" from a comment about simply being grateful that someone liked your writing enough to want to remember it and call it a favorite. You don't even have to offer communication.

I mean, I'm grateful when someone holds open a door for me, for example. It doesn't mean they did me a great favor or made a sacrifice.

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2012-06-10 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
You misunderstood. I'm saying the author that is upset somebody Favorited them but left no review is the stupid ungrateful one.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think that makes them ungrateful. I don't care about ff.net favorites because I don't care about ff.net, but on AO3 I'm not ABOUT to be grateful that somebody clicked the kudos button. Not even slightly.

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2012-06-11 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
Fair enough, but if you get a stick up your ass that they didn't leave a review, I'll judge you anyway.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-10 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Favoriting stories may not be a lot, but it's more than nothing. You don't have to do a song and dance about it, but if you complain that they *should* have reviewed as well/instead, then you're ungrateful. Or at least annyoing as fuck.
The reader didn't have to do either.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-11 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
yeah something is always more than nothing, let's abide by the lowest common denominator.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-11 11:30 am (UTC)(link)
This. I only fave things I intend to recommend to people later. I hardly ever review a fic or comment or whatever. Sometimes I might suggest it to a community or whatever.

Because I have nothing to say. Rading is a pleasure, but it's not fandom for me so I'm not going to give a dissertation on what I liked, didn't like etc. unless it's something REALLY striking.

And even then I'll just quote the part I liked and say I liked it. No detail.

I AM more likely to review something with <50 reviews. It will still be a "I like this" comment.

Hell, this comment is longer than any review - if only because I got a message earlier from someone I faved a fic demanding a review. It wasn't a nice or even polite comment, so I've unfaved it.
If they had politely asked for some crit I may have given an awkward explanation of what I liked/didn't like.
