i just recently started posting stuff on ff.net and for me, the only reason i can see people preferring a review over a favourite is because everyone can see the number of reviews, but only the author can see the number of favourites. so if a story has lots of favourites but only a few reviews, readers might be more likely to pass on reading it I guess, because it looks like people don't like it because there's not a lot of attention on it. that's one thing that's better about ao3 I guess, anyone can see the numbers for both comments and favourites.

For what it is worth, reviews have nothing to do with whether not not a I read a story. I'm just as likely to read a story with no reviews as one with thousands. However, I am a lot more likely to read a story that I find via the favorites of an author I enjoy than one that I found just browsing a site.

There is too much crap on FF.N to go through the main archive usually. I tend to find one or two authors I like and than go through their favorite lists. Continue until the fic runs out. I've attempted to read far too many fics with high review counts that were in fact terrible to use reviews as a measure of quality. Besides it's better, imho, to find someone who has the same tastes as you to get recommendations from.

This. Maybe above anon is different, but as a reader, I tend to look at amount of reviews as an indication of quality. I just don't have time to browse other people's favorites; I browse the archive and gauge by review count (which isn't always accurate, but is a good starting point). The only exception for me is when a fic has an original premise (i.e. about a character not typically written about). I write for myself, but you have to admit, it's pretty demoralizing to have no/very little readers, and if a review count, however inaccurate can lend to that, you don't want it low. #shrug

I would never do this. It is far to easy to falsify reviews an ff.net to increase the review count in order to get the ball rolling.

And I really think that is more common then you think.

I definitely prefer the rec/favorite path, although summary is #1 for me. Maybe it's just my experiences at ff.net, but I've seen a lot of junk with tons of reviews, especially the above-mentioned "I need 50 reviews to post the next chapter" stuff, while some real quality fics only have a handful.
