Oh please, if Cas was a girl Dean would've hit that three seasons ago at least; just look at Anna.

Unfortunately however, no one would actually ship it because it'd have been boring because the writers just plain suck at intentionally writing romance. It would've been the same "we're both attractive members of the opposite sex, let's fuck! (then the girl dies)" with barely any build-up or development like what usually happens. And that'd be the end of poor Cas.

For what it's worth, I do think that if female!Cas was written and treated exactly the same way as canon Cas (unlikely given the show's tendencies, but y'know), she'd still be a fairly popular character.

I agree with this. It's not that the female characters are female, it's that they're written solely as romantic foils and victims by people who are awful at romance, unlike male characters who get to be awesome and stand on their own. It wouldn't have gone any different with fem!Cas.

It's especially annoying because most of the time, they have really wonderful potential, but the show has a really annoying tendency of killing them off just as they're really coming into their own. The majority of my fave characters on the show are female, I just wish they'd been treated better.

And SPN should just stay away from romance point blank unless it's entirely accidental.

Thank you for saying everything I wanted to say but was late to. It's not that the fandom is inherently against female characters but that most of them are pretty cardboards who get it on with the boys in -0.05 seconds.

Agreed, and that's an interesting way to think about it - what if Cas had been female and had still been given exactly the same characterization? Granted, I don't think that would have happened - I do think that if Cas had been female to begin with, she'd be killed off pretty quickly. But if she hadn't, would the fandom still like her?

I'd like to think they would, which is definitely an interesting point.

I think the relationship would be a lot different between Dean and Cas. I think Dean has some problems seeing women as completely equal and a lot of the amusing things between the two would have never happened.

But Dean hitting on fem!Cas but her staying ignorant etc. would've been amusing aswell. But yeah, it would've been a completely different character so I don't know =/

I'm... gonna have to partially disagree! Sure, there are a lot of one-off characters that fit that description, but the recurring female characters that sleep with Sam and Dean are, what, Lisa, Anna, and Ruby? And out of those, Lisa's the only one I'd call something of a cardboard cut-out.

It's not that I think Supernatural is necessarily bad at making good female characters, it just tends to treat them like shit in the narrative and barely gives them a chance to develop before killing them. It's very upsetting.

But even more than that I think SPN is shit at romance. I'm pretty sure a lot of why Dean/Cas is compelling to me is because it's entirely accidental.

This could very well be true. Viewers in general don't like to be force fed something. They like to investigate, take hints, and reach their own conclusions. Maybe we can extend it to why so many fans flock to non-canon pairings in general.

That is of course not to say that well written, well established canon relationships don't attract fans, but as you correctly pointed out, that's not SPN.

I wouldn't say it's entirely accidental, the show likes to throw in plenty of quips and jokes about gay implications, but it's obvious they will never seriously develop those - at least as far as the lead characters are concerned.

Those little quips are lapped up just as much as the truly accidental implications and still allows fans to draw their own conclusions.
