Second, no one can say this for sure because it all depends on how they characterized Castiel. If he'd been female but maintained ALL of his personality traits (his badass-ness, his clueless-ness, his devotion to his father, his change of heart to denounce heaven and take humanity's side, his fascination with dean, his doubt, his fall from grace, his recent childlike behavior,) I believe the fandom would've embraced her. The problem is, looking at that list, there's no way I can see the SPN writers giving that many layers to a female character. They seem to have a set of default molds when it comes to girls: victim, scheming shrew, evil monster, caring bystander, mother. Blaming fandom for not liking a cardboard cutout, especially when they are asked to believe the boys care for them for some reason, is unfair. It's the writers' shortcoming for not extending the same faults/complexities/psychological hiccups they do men to women.
