Well, YMMV and all that, of course. I do agree with you about Loki though.

That being said, I think part of the Coulson appeal for some fanworks artists/writers is that there is no backstory. We don't know where this man came from. We don't know how he came to be Fury's one good eye. We don't know how he came to be able to disarm a guy with a shotgun with a bag of flour. There is a lot of wiggle room and people who like to play with that kind of backstory stuff are probably going to be drawn to that. Yes, he's "just another suit" but how did "just another suit" rise that high in SHIELD? How did he and Fury end up working so closely together? Etc. etc. etc.

As for the shipping stuff that many people have brought up. Well... shippers gonna ship, right? There's nothing that can be done to stop them come canon death or textual evidence. *shrugs* Such is life.

Plus the actor who plays him always looks like he has a really amusing secret and he's just biding his time before he lets you in on the joke.

Of course that might be because at any moment I half expect him to answer his phone and say 'dammit christine!'.

Yeah, I'm not sure where you got the idea that either canon death or textual evidence would slow down a hardcore shipper but I found that pretty hilarious.

Coulson could sign a blood oath affirming that he has never had the slightest inclination towards being sexually attracted to another man before being pronounced beyond-the-shadow of a doubt dead and I bet it wouldn't even slow down the slashers from slashing without missing a beat or even having to declare it an AU.
