anime questions

(Anonymous) 2012-06-12 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
1. Why in so many animes do I see a dramatic scene where a character suddenly collapses from exertion (or from being in the rain?) and breaks into fever and stuff?

Is this a recurrent problem in Japan due to weather or whatever?

Do fever-inducing super-viruses abound there?

2. Another dramatic scene that keeps popping up:

Two characters are suddenly rivals or enemies or just not agreeing or whatever, and to reflect this they either have a dramatic conversation or walk past each other, but they just have to stand still for a while to talk with their backs to each other (but their backs aren't facing each other directly).

What does it mean?! What sort of cultural context am I missing here?

Answers please. Please. Please. ;__;

The first one has been a cliche forever though, and not just in Japan. I've certainly seen it in tons of American fanfic for things that aren't anime. It happens in Jude the Obscure and in Studs Lonigan too, so it's pretty old.

1) It's a dramatic cliche. Kind of like how getting hit on the head causes amnesia in so many stories. That, and if you stand it the cold rain for a long time you are more likely to get sick than if you are warm inside.

2) Again dramatic cliche rears its head. These people are either tryiing to play it cool, feel too nervous to look the other person in the eye, or they are hiding something. When trying to reconcilliate, they put themselves in a vulnerable position. Hiding their face without looking down gives the speaker some emotional distance while letting them maintain a confident stance. Also, this is often used to create tension. Unable to see the speakers face, the main character or the audience can only rely on their tone. Their faces often tell a different story.

Huh. Well, maybe it's just a specific way that it pops up in anime. That makes sense, I guess. I hadn't see it in quite the same way in Western works, and not so often.

As for two, I think it makes sense, but why does it pop up so much in Anime and nowhere else? Does it have to do with all the multitude of social rules and standards they have to follow?
