So much WORD.

I love well-written redemption fics, but it's just lazy writing turning it into "Asshole Character Finds Love And Is Redeemed". Hell, I'm not saying there cannot be a love interest, but Asshole Character has to be sorry for what they did, suffer the consequences of their choices and WORK to obtain people's trust/forgiveness/whatnot.
If they're "redeemed" solely because of said love interest, then there isn't any "redemption" at all. C'mon, authors, give us some character development. I want to see this guy struggle every step of the way to his redemption - that's the fun part!

I might actually be interested in Loki if I could find redemption fics of the type you're craving. Right now, the only one I can think of that might fit what you're looking for it is this one called Forcible Redemption by Sarah1281 on fanfiction.net. It's not very far yet, but given the type of stories she writes, I have faith, you know? :)

If there's one thing Loki wasn't lacking to begin with, it was love: he might not have had as much respect from his father and brother as he wanted, but it's obvious Thor loves him and always has, and there's definite caring there with Odin and Frigga as well.

I mean, that's not the same thing as wild sexy Mary Sue love, but I still feel like it's evidence enough that he's going to need something else if he's going to be redeemed, because Love's clearly not cutting it.

I really need to start compiling a master list of all the awesome Loki redemption fics I find, because the ones I've been finding have little if anything to do with random love interests.

Since I haven't done that yet, I would instead like to direct everyone's attention to the last similar secret's comment thread which contained a lot of good recs. :)

And also, adding Redemption Song by HelennotofTroy to that, since it came out after that thread happened. It's in progress but it's looking like it's going to be fantastic so far.

Yeah, good point; that's kinda been done. It'd be interesting to do something else (though honestly I think his redemption will come via Thor & his family--i.e., love, but not romantic love).

I'd like to see more Loki redemption fics where Odin, Frigga, and Thor are the catalysts, since his relationship with his family is such a massive part of his character, as well as his primary motivation.

However if you're squeamish... I would stay far far away. It's not quite what you asked for. It works off the assumption that Loki was recaptured by the Chitauri and horribly (seriously, it's awful and disturbing and heartbreaking) tortured. I hesitate to even call it a redemption fic thus far, because up until current it's more of a "let's try and get you back to being a functioning human being." It brings up the conflict between 'how do we express to him that what happened to him was unacceptable and no one deserves it' versus 'you just killed thousands of people, and you should feel bad.' It deals with disordered eating, psychotic breaks, and I think we're even seeing some cognitive behavioural therapy. There is a relationship, but as of the four entry (two multi chaptered) in the series it is non sexual.

Seriously, if you're looking for something gritty and realistic with regards to 'Loki being redeemed' I can't recommend this enough.

wow, I haven't read any loki redemption fic, but your description is more or less how I assumed it was written! Almost makes me want to write some fic myself.

I feel somewhat opposed to this because I feel like there's nothing wrong with love playing some role in his redemption, but it's more that he needs to learn how to accept love and that's more complicated than just finding the right person or whatever.

I hate "love = redemption" fics because it's like, Great, Loki can love! Um, I don't think that was ever in doubt, and (especially after Avengers), he's killed hundreds, if not thousands, of people.

I just got into Avengers fandom, including Thor, so I'm still wading my way through all the fanworks, and the possibility that there are so few well written redemption fics makes me go D:

The "redeemed through love" trope is so fucking boring and lazy -- especially the romantic love version. Honestly "uh....he fell in love!" is NOT a valid explanation for drastic character development. Sorry. You have to tell me why he redeemed himself genuinely. I'm not going to root for a guy who's only being good because the sparkly speshul magic of lurve brainwashed him into a guy who pukes puppies and rainbows, or because he's infatuated with Thor/Tony/OFC self-insert and can't get into their pants otherwise. I'd root for a guy who has some sort of moral awakening like Natasha or Tony or Thor -- and "I don't want to hurt my brother by killing people he likes" doesn't count.

If a romance happens too, fine, good way of showing character development if you can avoid lazy shortcuts and cliches, but don't give me that "redeemed through love" bullshit.

(Also, why don't people do more "holy shit I'm a monster please let me redeem myself and fix what I did" fics rather than "he was actually a poor abused misunderstood brainwashed woobie who just needed a hug the whole time" fics? Redemption fics are so much more satisfying.)

I'll just leave "Truthfully", this fill on the Thor Kinkmeme here. The way it's laid out is weird, and on LJ it's a pain to expand each reply thread seperately, but I've found it to be worth the effort. (And it still updates pretty regularly, 63 parts and counting.)

Where do people keep finding these fics?! I've been around ever since Avengers came out, but I've never found Mary Sue fic. I get the redeemed through love thing, but maybe I'm just hanging out in all the right places because I don't see much of it.

I'm actually writing one. It's got pairings, but they're more fringe benefit than anything else. No romance and twue wuv and whatever nonsense that is. It's slow going, being that it's Loki and he's a bit of an asshole to write... but there will be one soon!

I've not seen many of those kind of fics but I've seen enough to annoy me. Also Mary Sue seems to get abused by him via whatever the author thinks is kinky sex and that kinda squicks me a bit that girls are having these fantasies where a character seems to hold their OC in nothing but contempt...and suddenly BAM love.

If he's going to be redeemed by love I always felt the cast meant it'd be difficult for his family and friends to love him after what he's done, but somehow they'll get there.
