i'm not talking about blood type LMAO god

ethnicity and race are primarily social constructs yeah but both also have biological parameters; if you consider ethnicity the shared heritage of your ancestors than referring to yourself as - for instance - german (in an ethnic sense) is still correct

the major discrepancy in this thread is between referring to labels like irish and german as nationalities and referring to them as ethnicities that are shared through ancestry

The problem is there is no valid definition of "ethnicity", usually it's definied as shared culture, language, and/or religion. Also, you wouldn't really say that your ethnicity is German, it's a nationality. Ethnic branch would be Germanic. In my case it would be Slavic. However, this derived form a tribal area classification where various nations begun.

"german" is a valid ethnic label too.

there's also no concrete definition for people who refer to themselves as "german" - be them citizens of germany or those of german ancestry - so claiming somebody "can't be german" merely because they live elsewhere is inherently false, which is my point.

German is a sub-ethnic group. My point is not that someone living abroad should be stripped of their nationality. Secret's OP mentioned someone not in thouch with their anestors' culture (or not having such ancestors). It's that ethnicity and race are social constructs. Anon above mentioned eugenics and really, that's creepy as fuck becuase it's based on suppossed ethnic and racial biological differences.

how is your point conflicting with mine??? when did i ever say people living abroad should be stripped of their nationality?

implying i somehow support eugenics when i'm an adamant opponent of it is both insulting and unfounded. i already explained that biological parameters are present in ethnic and racial groups, despite their social implications, so writing biological attributes off because you apparently think they can only be one or the other is unfounded too.

also eugenics is controlled selection through genetic differences as a whole, it initially had nothing to do with ethnicity and race. so by this logic you should be just as offended, if not more so, on discussion relating to, say, hair colour or gender, despite both of these demographics also having actual genetic differences.

What!? Where did I say that you support eugenics :O ? I said that anon mentioned eugenics and it's based on the concept of ethnic cleanse to create a perfect genetic group. For example, IQ tests to people of ethnic minorities were administered to confirm they're inferior. I'm not saying that people of same ancestorage do not share common traits, I'm talking about sociological classifications.

sorry, i misunderstood you u__u my fault

:P No worries, it's 4AM for me so I might not be that coherent.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-15 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Nobody thinks you actually want to support eugenics. Relax. But you're clearly unconscious of some really troubling links between that and the disconcerting claims you're making about bloodlines and genetics here.

[personal profile] honk 2012-06-15 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
i see the links in the mindset but i don't see how people are getting angry at me for pointing out genetics in ancestry unless they're accusing me of supporting eugenics. there's a difference between acknowledging objective genetic/biological differences in ethnic people and thinking some people shouldn't be allowed to breed. @___@

so overall i don't see what's so disconcerting about ancestral genetics being brought up as a point of discussion.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-15 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
Basically, because what you think you're pointing out about ancestry and genetics is not as factual as you think it is, and the mistakes you're making are the ones whose main use (besides being wrong on the internet I guess) is rationalising eugenics. You have good intentions, I am sure, but you would benefit from learning more about the history and context of eugenics&genocides and ideas of race/ethnicity, so you don't keep mistakenly repeating the stuff that we usually hear only from people with distinctly nasty ideologies about "ethnic cleanliness".

lmao @ your condescension, how cute

i'm not "wrong" but you're more than welcome to enlighten me as to what exactly you think i'm "wrong" about. biological parameters, for like the 4th time, are factually present in ethnicities and races. if i were to say these parameters were detrimental to society, then yeah, you'd have a point. except i'm not fucking saying that at all, and you're just seeing what you want to see in order to be offended by something that isn't being said.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-15 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Looking through the thread, the problem is that those sorts of arguments have been made as excuses to persecute or oppress people, rather than as the neutral, matter-of-fact sort of information they all should be, aimed at medicine and health-related fields to help people. (And not "help" as in "your genes are inferior, we must stop you from propagating" bullshit that so many hate-groups have tried.)
honk: (Default)

[personal profile] honk 2012-06-15 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
so why are you projecting hate groups' mentalities onto me when it's obvious that i'm coming from the matter-of-fact perspective
honk: (Default)

[personal profile] honk 2012-06-15 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
wait sorry i didn't realise you were a DA until i posted

(Anonymous) 2012-06-15 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, it's cool.

I agree with you, for whatever it's worth, but this is the result you're risking when for some reason or another, you don't know or take into account the different contexts that people are coming with when they look at internet posts and such.

I say this as someone who has stumbled headfirst into wank landmines for coming from a different culture where discriminatory problems come in a different flavor than, say, America, where there is a bigger percentage of immigrants from a huge number of different places in the world, compared to other countries, and so the social problems are of a different variety than I ever expected. (Not that America is the only place where this sort of thing happens, obviously, but I'm just using the first example that came to mind!)

(Anonymous) 2012-06-15 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
But there have been instances of genetic diseases or divergences popping up in specific areas. The region you and your ancestors lived in have a real, physical effect in your genes, all social constructs aside.

[personal profile] fanaberia 2012-06-15 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, I'm not denying this, just diverging into politics :P . I'm not that great with medicine, but yeah it happens.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-15 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, if you meant the political/social side of it, yeah, it shouldn't matter as much as people insist that it matter.

Such things should never be excuses to treat other people badly.
