okay, I am a person who is scared of everything ever but I totally read all the spoilers for this film and it sounds amazing. Has anyone who isn't great with horror seen it? Did it keep you awake at night for weeks on end?

someone who isn't a horror fan please please write a review or something; I want to see this because of Whedon but if it's scary I won't be able to go out at night for weeks

Really, the only thing you'll be wondering for weeks after the end is Why the fuck does that button EXIST? Well, and you might have some triggers set off by random images of All The Scary Things near the end, but I don't want to spoil you by saying what.

Oh my goodness, I'm in the same situation. I am terrible with horror/scary things but I want to see it....

looking at the comments here, it seems like this one might actually be safe for us fraidy-cats.

It's really not scary at all. A bit creepy, a little too gory in one or two parts, but it's more of a comedy than a horror movie.

well, i love horror movies, but regardless of watching hundreds of them i'm still a giant wimp. i close my eyes more than not, and i sit through them knowing full well that i'll have nightmares.

however this movie isn't bad. gory as hell (seriously, blood and guts flying everywhere...beware), but i think it's very much a satire. it's not very scary. i don't even know if i would call it a horror movie, even though the elements of one are there.

but for what it's worth, i thought it was a pretty flat movie. i got what whedon was trying to do, but i think he failed. i was pretty disappointed.

I am really, really, reaaaaally bad with horror; I have more than one anxiety disorder, am easily squicked, the whole nine yards. I went to see Cabin in the Woods because of Joss Whedon and Fran Kranz.

It isn't really all that scary. I honestly found it more funny than scary -- there are a few gore shots, but most of the scares are "jump scares" rather than atmospheric scares.. (I draw a difference there -- jump scares [shocking things that scare you because they're so sudden] don't freak me out like atmospheric scares [where there's an oppressive, scary atmosphere a la Silent Hill games or the SCPF Containment Breach game]) It has a really heavy dose of humor and sarcasm that I felt balances the horror aspects really well.

The only thing I'd really warn for is that if you're going to see it because, like me, you'd heard that it deconstructs some of the more troubling tropes of horror films, it um. Doesn't really. It calls attention to them and then kind of follows through with them anyway. That really bummed me out and soured my experience with the movie, personally, so yeah.

But as horror movies go, it's very tame. There's blood and a little gore, but it wasn't overwhelming and it didn't give me nightmares or even make me leave the theater feeling uneasy or creeped out.

jump scares are what usually stick with me, if the imagery is scary enough :x but actually a balance that prevents it from being brutally violent will definitely help :)

Anyway honestly I can't comment so much on horror tropes because I know about so many of them from second- or third-hand sources; I almost never watch or read the genre. So whether or not it deconstructs it would be lost on me lol

Just to add to what's already been said: I'm a huge wuss. This was not scary at all. Some suspenseful moments and jumps, but nothing creepy. There is gallons of blood, a bit a gore, but it isn't that lingering, fetishistic gore designed to disturb you. The movie just zips along.

One of my favorite movies evar, saw it twice in theater! :D

I have huge issues with horror. I get really scared. Of everything. LOL I was pregnant when I saw The Ring and started having contractions during the movie because it freaked me out so much.

I had real reservations about seeing the movie but went anyway because it's Joss Whedon. I was not scared at all. Parts of the movie are creepy, but to me, it was more funny than anything else. I really, really enjoyed.

I normally dislike horror movies, but I loved this one. It's mostly humor and minimally gross.

But it's very, very Joss Whedon, so if you detest his style you'll hate this as well (conversely if you love his style, you'll love this.)

Yeah, I'm NOT a horror fan, but I went along to this one with some friends and it wasn't really scary at all. There were a couple of jump-startles, but nothing much, and the gore was so OTT that it wasn't scary anymore. It certainly didn't keep me up at night.

I absolutely can't stand horror films, they scare me to death and give me so many nightmares. But, beyond a few jump scares and a lot of gore, this film did not scar me and I absolutely loved it. See it when you get the chance!

I get panic attacks from watching even "not so scary" horror movies. I went to see this movie with a friend because I really wanted to see it before the spoilers, and wanted to see a movie with my friend before he graduated college, and wanted to try and be brave.

There's like two jump scares and a scene or two where I hid my eyes. The violence is mostly off-screen or in darkness or implied ... until the climax, which is just so much stuff happening at once that it's more funny than scary. And if you're scared, you can just hide your eyes until the screaming and crazy noises stop.
I had no trouble sleeping. In fact I wanted to go back and watch it again!

I laughed a lot in the theater, I only gasped or got scared a couple of times. I can't recommend it enough, even to fellow scardy cats!

I thought it kinda sucked tbh, I just didn't like the story or the ending but I totally agree it was some top notch trolling.
The part that sticks out to me is when I had to ask my husband "Is this dude for real eating this girl out in the woods?"
(Not that I blame her, I would be torn in that decision as well. He is absolutely divine IMO)

OK, SO... Having not seen the movie, but knowing it has zombies and werewolves and other shit attacking/maiming/devouring the campers, as well as having the ultrasexyfine Chris Hemworth as the horror standard Jock with a Slutty Girlfriend, I have to ask for clarification:

"Is he cannibalizing her, in the middle of the forest?" OR "Is he performing oral sex on her in the middle of the forest?"

(not AYRT but I have seen the movie so)

Haha, don't worry, poster means in the oral sex sense. Although not really, he wasn't down there long enough to do much with his mouth beyond a few seconds' worth, which made me a bit sad... (I still loved the movie, but that would've just been the cherry on top.)

LOL a perfect example of how a sentence can be written perfectly well and still have dual meanings.

That movie was fantastic! I saw it just cause local theatre had a Chris Hemsworth night and I'm so glad I did, I had no idea that it'd be a comedy and so awesome.

I thought it was a really loving deconstruction of the horror film genre rather than a troll.

And really, who doesn't like Richard Jenkins?

well it is supposed to be a stealth parody.
