(Anonymous) 2012-06-15 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)someone who isn't a horror fan please please write a review or something; I want to see this because of Whedon but if it's scary I won't be able to go out at night for weeks

(Anonymous) 2012-06-15 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)however this movie isn't bad. gory as hell (seriously, blood and guts flying everywhere...beware), but i think it's very much a satire. it's not very scary. i don't even know if i would call it a horror movie, even though the elements of one are there.
but for what it's worth, i thought it was a pretty flat movie. i got what whedon was trying to do, but i think he failed. i was pretty disappointed.

It isn't really all that scary. I honestly found it more funny than scary -- there are a few gore shots, but most of the scares are "jump scares" rather than atmospheric scares.. (I draw a difference there -- jump scares [shocking things that scare you because they're so sudden] don't freak me out like atmospheric scares [where there's an oppressive, scary atmosphere a la Silent Hill games or the SCPF Containment Breach game]) It has a really heavy dose of humor and sarcasm that I felt balances the horror aspects really well.
The only thing I'd really warn for is that if you're going to see it because, like me, you'd heard that it deconstructs some of the more troubling tropes of horror films, it um. Doesn't really. It calls attention to them and then kind of follows through with them anyway. That really bummed me out and soured my experience with the movie, personally, so yeah.
But as horror movies go, it's very tame. There's blood and a little gore, but it wasn't overwhelming and it didn't give me nightmares or even make me leave the theater feeling uneasy or creeped out.

Anyway honestly I can't comment so much on horror tropes because I know about so many of them from second- or third-hand sources; I almost never watch or read the genre. So whether or not it deconstructs it would be lost on me lol

Re: tropes the ones that bugged me the most were the "virgin/whore" dichotomy -- you know, there's the "slutty" blonde "whore" woman character who will die messily, and the virginal, less-standard-issue-beautiful woman who
survivesmakes it through to the end, and there will be no other female characters involved (in the horror part anyway). They pretty much played through that and it annoyed the hell out of me, as I'd been under the impression that if nothing else, Whedon would try to subvert it more than he did.no subject
(Anonymous) 2012-06-16 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)Aww, I thought they handled those tropes really cleverly. :/ The brunette 'virgin' was hardly befitting of her label due to her relationship with her teacher-far from the typical image of an innocent, virginal mc- and the blonde 'whore' was actually shown to be quite intelligent to begin with, and in a steady, secure relationship with her boyfriend. It was only until she dyed her hair blonde that was laden with those 'bimbo' chemicals did she actually begin to be shoehorned into the 'whore' for the audience. As a matter of fact, they all were, including the athletic guy at the beginning who was emphasised on his intelligence, and the smart boyfriend of the 'whore' who was turned dumb anf jockish by the chemicals.
Heck, ALL the characters were shown to be so much more than their labels at the beginning, and I thought it was a clever demonstration of how Hollywood strips these characters of their third dimensions and gives them straight forward roles, just to make things simpler and more entertaining to the audience. Because at the end of the day, the majority of us are those gods buried under the ground, and should something dare to subvert the horror genre and its characters, then we come bursting out of the ground raging.
Uh...I don't know where all that came from. XD I really love that movie, and particularly the handling of the characters, so I felt compelled to defend them.
I'll shut up now.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-16 12:35 am (UTC)(link)One of my favorite movies evar, saw it twice in theater! :D
go see it!
I had real reservations about seeing the movie but went anyway because it's Joss Whedon. I was not scared at all. Parts of the movie are creepy, but to me, it was more funny than anything else. I really, really enjoyed.
Re: go see it!
But it sounds like I can take your word on this topic though LOL

And the thing is, it was a great movie. Full of surprises, great plot, atmospheric. It impressed me. And I can never watch it again because my husband refuses to get up in the middle of the night to accompany me to the bathroom. LOL
(Bonus Ring silliness: we had gone to visit our parents when we saw the movie and traveled the three hundred or so miles back home in very bad weather. When we pulled into Oxford, the entire town was dark. No lights on ANYWHERE. We come home to a house with no electricity, and as I opened the front door, moonlight glinted on the blank television screen, and I nearly just screamed and told Josh I was sleeping in the car.)

But it's very, very Joss Whedon, so if you detest his style you'll hate this as well (conversely if you love his style, you'll love this.)

(Anonymous) 2012-06-17 03:15 am (UTC)(link)There's like two jump scares and a scene or two where I hid my eyes. The violence is mostly off-screen or in darkness or implied ... until the climax, which is just so much stuff happening at once that it's more funny than scary. And if you're scared, you can just hide your eyes until the screaming and crazy noises stop.
I had no trouble sleeping. In fact I wanted to go back and watch it again!
I laughed a lot in the theater, I only gasped or got scared a couple of times. I can't recommend it enough, even to fellow scardy cats!
