That interpretation is out-of-character for Loki for pretty much the same reason his calling Natasha a cunt was out-of-character. Loki literally considers humans equivalent to insects, he may talk about ruling them as a vague hivemind but his hatred is unconditional, has no differing "degrees" because it's toward a species he sees as a brainless colony, and is based entirely on his superiority over them. Raping a human would be self-degradation in its purest form to someone who prides themselves on being above people in every way.

Also why is this even a thing. Seriously, people thought he was threatening to mind-control a dude to rape a woman? Loki? Sigghhhh

Plus, while his comment about Jane certainly seems to be sexual in nature, it's pretty obvious that's just him going "oh hey Thor you like that human? WELL WATCH ME GO AND BREAK ALL YOUR TOYS NYUK NYUK NYUK HOW DO YOU FEEL NOW"

Exactly. Loki doesn't care about debasing Jane. He just wants to annoy Thor at that point.

I actually theorize that the reason he lost control so badly and went into that tirade when he was talking to Natasha was because he saw himself in her and that just scared the shit out of him -- here is this pathetic little human jabbering about how she used to be evil but then just went "fuck this" and decided to stop being evil, to be good instead and to stop killing people and to atone for her sins and help protect the world.

And that totally undermines Loki's whole "you forced me to become this person I'm a jotun and I'm not your real brother and it's my destiny I had no choice wah wah wah!" line he keeps throwing at Thor. Because Natasha simply chose to become good in spite of all the shit she did, which means Loki could have chosen to become good too if he had decided he really wanted to. His whole rant at her about how she could never atone for her sins seemed to be a complete case of him projecting on her and trying to convince himself he had no choice.

Yeah, actually I did see shades of that when I watched that scene. I think it was mostly an attempt to rattle her, but that it struck a chord with Loki may very well be why he went into full-blown tantrum mode.

I still think that overall Loki perceives what he's doing on Earth to be pretty much like a kid burning ants with a magnifying glass ("He killed 80 people in two days"), making the idea of sexual violence against said ants seem out-of-place to me in addition to cheapening him as a villain.

But, well, Joss Whedon. I can't say that RAPERAPERAPE wasn't intended somehow.

Oh absolutely. Well said. He really was talking about himself when he was talking to her, I believe that was deliberate on Whedon's part.

As for authorial intent in Thor & the Avengers re rape, we live in a rape culture, of powerful men and victim women = violence = rape, and I really don't think it is a stretch to imagine this possibility occurred to the authors.

Of course they weren't going to Go There with saying this however. A threat of violence against a woman is really all you need.

I... really, really like this, and I think it fits in much better with his overall characterization in the movies than the rape interpretation, particularly when thinking about what Tom Hiddleston, Ken Brannagh, and Joss Whedon have said about their intentions for his character in interviews. (I know that's sort of outside canon, but I enjoy the "actor/director/writer's intent" angle as well.) I agree with other people in the thread, too, who have pointed out that Loki sees humans as ants (hence: boot), and I think seeing himself reflected in these - in his mind - vastly inferior creatures is probably horrifying in and of itself, because that would mean that Thor was right about how they're NOT actually so far above them, and the throne suiting Loki ill, and so on.

I hope you don't mind terribly if I adopt this as my headcanon for that scene. XD; Really well put.

Yes!! That crossed my mind as well when watching the movie, not as layered as you put it. Loki and Tasha's conersation was one of my favorite scenes in the movie.
