I didn't interpret the line in Thor that way, but the one in Avengers struck me as that kind of threat and as a sign of how far he'd gone from where he was at the end of Thor. I don't think it's so much to do with what LOKI wants to see done to someone/do to someone but more an exertion of power (which rape is obviously) and if that's what they fear, so be it.

And to have someone's friend/lover/whatever do it... well, that's just the level of twisted I think he's capable of. [shrugs]

I don't see this as likely at all. He was given no indication that Natasha feared such a thing, would have gathered from Hawkeye how she specializes in wrecking peoples' shit (which is even easier to do in something where the person's goal involves taking a time-out of combat to rape you), and that just doesn't seem like the kind of thing Loki is interested in. Threatening to force a person's friend/loved one to maim/kill them seems adequately twisted to me.

The thing is, there is nothing in that speech that says anything about a combat situation. Loki assumes he'll win. He'd have her either dead or at his mercy at that point. He could do as he wished for as long as he wished. He says Barton told him everything. Now that doesn't mean everything about her professionally, necessarily (Even though her "specific skill set" would imply some sexual dealings there; they don't call her the Black Widow for nothing). That means everything he knows about her and given how close the characters are (romantic or not), that's a lot to work with.

As someone upstream here said, there's an ambiguity to the threats that leave it all up to the viewer to figure out what they think Loki's point of no return on this is. So it's very YMMV. This is all just my take on.

That's true, it is an open to interpretation thing. If I see it the next time I watch the movie, I'm blaming Joss Whedon's rape fixation.

Exactly this. It's not even about it being of a sexual nature, it's purely about finding every possible way to "kill" someone. As he said, "slowly, intimately, in every way he knows you fear." I don't think he's just referring to rape, but I think that's somewhere on the table, along with a whole other host of Bad. That's not his specific threat. But he does want to destroy her utterly and...yeah, that's certainly one way to go about doing it. Especially when you get the feeling Clint is probably one of one (maybe two) people in the world she trusts.

Yes! Exactly! It's the idea of turning someone who knows all the dirty little details and fears and using that against her. Whatever they may be.

I agree with this, and I think it's important to note that we are talking about the God of Lies, here. Whether Loki would or wanted to make Clint go through with the threats is irrelevant - he's just doing everything he can to fuck with Natasha. When push came to shove, I'm sure he'd be just as happy tossing her off a cliff and being done with it, but making her think about all the terribad things he's going to do to her is a great way to get her guard down.

I see it less as an expression of what Loki's capable of doing and more what Loki wants you to think he's capable of doing.
