Er, nobody's arguing that it isn't within an author's rights to say that fanfic shan't EVER EVER be written for their works (because people might make the characters do ICKY THINGS! SHOCK! HORROR!.

What people are saying is that it's a fucking stupid mentality for author's to have. Which it is.

Whups, the author disagrees with you, and has different opinions on their intellectual property. That is pretty stupid of them!

(Anonymous) 2012-06-16 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
But...it is stupid.

Fanfiction: Don't like? Don't read. Pretty simple concept. If an author has problems with what people might be doing to their fictional made-up characters...just don't read the fic.

They shouldn't be doing that anyways.

(Btw, are you like paid to be The Author's White Knight or something? I swear, it's like you think it's ALL UP TO YOU TO DEFEND THEIR HONOR, while they cry into a bucket of money.)

I just think there's a matter of respecting someone who created something you like enough to make fanfic. And I'm just a little appalled by the attitude of a lot of fans in that regard. You don't have to obey them, but just a little bit of respect.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-16 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
For me, personally, I just can't respect someone who holds a view that is so utterly nonsensical to me. Fanfiction harms no one. It doesn't steal away anyone's copyright in the night. If an author doesn't like fanfiction there's absolutely no reason that they would ever even see it anyways. So when they rail against it like it ate their firstborn child, I just can't take them seriously anymore.

Basically, I can't personally respect views that I don't consider worthy of respect. I might respect a writer for their writing capabilities, but that respect doesn't automatically extend to their views just because they wrote something I enjoyed.

I don't think disregarding their preferences with regards to something they are perfectly free to ignore constitutes disrespect. Respecting an author means, principally, buying their books. Anything beyond that is not really relevant.

And like I said, I'm not even saying "don't write the fanfic." It's purely the attitude of "The author should be grateful and they're stupid if they don't like this" that gets on my nerves.

No, it's not. Crazy thing some people like their ideas and characters to stay theirs. Not everyone is worried about the extra bucks they hypothetically could make off Sally's AU fic about the vampire characters as teens. (Or whatever.)

(Anonymous) 2012-06-16 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Um, a person writing fanfic doesn't make the characters any less of the author's. I don't even understand this kind of mentality. If a person writing fanfic meant the author was going to lose out on their property then JK Rowling should be a pauper right now.

And if you mean metaphorically "stay theirs," then I don't get this mentality either. If you are so insecure that you can't handle the thought that someone, out there, might do something to your characters...well, fanfiction is hardly your biggest problem in life.

(Also, you're going to be losing a lot of sleep because if we can all be sure about one thing, it's that fanfiction will be written.)

(Anonymous) 2012-06-16 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, it mostly likely will be written but that doesn't mean the author has to agree with it. Sure, you can see the benefits that this would give them and their fanbase but in the end it is up to them to want it or not.

The only time I would agree with you on this is with a writer not wanting fanfiction done on their own fanfiction. And that is only because it is hypercritical.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-16 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
And I'm not saying an author has to agree with people writing fanfiction. What I am saying is that I reserve the right to think that they're being short-sighted, old-fashioned, and just generally wrong all around. Particularly when they attempt to go so far as to ban fanfiction, because that shows an incredibly sad amount of immaturity and insecurity to me.

Basically, authors can have whatever POV on fanfiction they like, and I can criticize them for it however I like.

(Also, IA about fanfiction writers not wanting fanworks of their fanfic being ridiculously hypocritical. I can't stand it when people do that.)
