To be honest, I think Loki threatening Natasha with rape would be kind of cheap and shitty on the part of the writers. We know that Natasha fears the possibility that she can't make up for the things she's done. We know that she performs a job that involves evading death daily with near-superhuman strength, wit and reflexes. There are many subconscious fears there, both physical and mental, that a god who specializes in manipulation and trickery could exploit -- and even if there weren't, he's spent a chunk of the movie engaged in terrible alternatives like wantonly murdering people by the dozens.

Why just pull out, for the only woman on the team, the fear or threat you think she should be confronted with because she's a woman, that isn't even that appropriate for the person saying it nor a primary concern of the woman herself? Right after sneaking in an equally out-of-place gendered insult, and then chortling about how you slyly introduced people to yet another gross thing to call women? I mean, I know that she's all strong and whatnot and we can see it in how Loki's threats don't really faze her (working under the assumption that that's even what is being implied), but can we not even get through a 2 hour superhero movie without having the only female team member be used to remind us that women are constantly called disgusting things and sexually brutalized, as a shortcut to Strong Female Character*?

:(

*i am not saying natasha was not a strong female character

Because, well, that's what a lot of men do to women. And in movies, male bad guys know that basically every woman on the planet has at least a trace of built-in paranoia of rape culture, and if it occurs to them, they'll try to use it to their advantage.

I thought what Loki said to Natasha was quite appropriate from a narrative point of view in this particular scenario, because that's what Natasha specializes in -- getting men to think she's a Faux Action Girl and then laugh at and insult her and condescendingly treat her like a weak little trembling girl, and then tricking information out of them. She definitely doesn't have much of an ego -- if appearing pathetic will serve her purposes, she has no problem with it. So Loki threatening her like that and calling her names seemed to be nicely indicative that he had forgotten anything Clint might've told him about what Natasha was capable of and was reveling in good ol' fashioned misogynistic intimidation, before she suddenly ups and just strolls off in the middle of his speech, having gotten what she wanted out of him. I think that was hilarious and very satisfying as a way to completely make his threats (rapey or not) and sexist insults look ridiculous.

That's true, but I felt it was a bit shoehorned in in this case because Loki doesn't really have much reason to be misogynistic towards what he sees as an inferior being, any more than you or I would look at a dog and go "hmmm yep that sure is a woman", and like another anon said, trying to bait Natasha with a "fear" she really doesn't seem to have, when we've been given more compelling ones throughout the movie, just makes him look incompetent.
It wasn't the only time Loki utterly failed to display his competence at being manipulative in a failed non-hamfisted way, but it seemed like Joss Whedon basically just wanted to have him call her a cunt so he did, seeing as he bragged about slipping "weeping cunt" into the script.
