The thing is that any source material that goes into the public consciousness changes things. When Conan Doyle first wrote about Holmes going over Reichenbach falls, fans wore black in mourning. When the Star Trek series and the Star Wars movies come out, new authors starting writing their own stories (with the permission of the creators). Every comic reboot ever has been inspired by someone going, "I have more stories to tell with these characters." The portrayal of vampires and zombies has changed drastically over the last fifty years because of a really popular book, video game, or tv series characterizing them differently.

It is this enthusiasm that keeps these stories alive. They continue with or without the author. Conan Doyle started to loathe writing Sherlock Holmes but continued because he needed the money.Despite his opinions, his stories are still going strong over 100 years later. We remember Sherlock Holmes because people still tell stories about him. Just as they do for Lupin and Raffles to a lesser extent.

We remember Red Riding Hood and Sleeping Beauty because people keep telling new stories about them. Do you really think the original stories with rape and gore would have gone over as well with general audiences in our era?

Fanfiction is just that. People being interested enough to want to tell more stories.
