I find it sad that people still get really upset over the holocaust.

But no-one gives a shit about the Second Congo War which ended EIGHT YEARS ago with 5.4 million deaths, or the Rwandan Genocide. No one discusses the german citizens living in Europe and the Americas who had nothing to do with the holocaust - being kicked out of the countries and stuck in camps. Estimated up to 200k deaths caused by that.
Oh and displaced families. German families that were not involved with nazis and had the unfortunate heritage of being not in germany.

Not to mention Native Americans and Aboriginal genocide. The former is at least noticed. The second forgotten because on the other side of the ocean.

There's all these recent, horrible disasters happening, but it's the holocaust everyone fusses over because while classes talk about the history of wars the US was involved in (and glosses over the current one) - it doesn't educate on other wars currently happening or with worse casualties.

But then Kony 2012 only last a couple of days before dying.

Korea is just 'politely' ignored because who wants to admit they both murdered people and lost there.

Pakistan and Vietnam only get the most tokenism of the deaths.

There have been so many horrible genocides, there are genocides happening right now. There have been murders in the thousands and millions in the past TEN YEARS

But it's the holocaust people care about.

O-kay, so I wanted to stop reading right there. But.

I think it mostly depends on where you live? I'm European, and I've visited Auschwitz-Birkenau and met with Holocaust survivors as well as read many books about it, so yeah, Holocaust is still horrifying for me. If I lived in America, I would probably care more about the genocide of Native Americans.

Oh, and you forgot to mention the war in Yugoslavia.

You have absolutely zero right to say what people can or cannot still be upset about. The Holocaust has deeply scarred those that were affected by it and their descendants.

Yes, the world is a dark place and plenty of other atrocities have taken place since the Holocaust, but that doesn't mean that people aren't allowed to still be upset about it. An event like the Holocaust is hard to forget, so it's really presumptuous of you to think that it should be so easy -- that people should be over it by now.

No. You do not get to dictate when people move on.

da

it's just sad that no one else seems to be able to muster the same emotional frothing over current genocide. genocide that is happening in our own backyards. genocide this is ALSO SCARRING THOSE WHO IT IS HAPPENING TO RIGHT NOW AND THEIR DESCENDANTS WILL ALSO BE SCARRED BY IT.

but please, continue to focus on one thing in history and don't look at the world around you and the people being affected RIGHT NOW.

that's what the anon was saying, dickbag.

Well, see, though, that's why we say "Lest we forget." We should remember the atrocities of WWII so we can recognize when the same thing starts happening again (as it has and does in many places, as you say), and step forward and stop them.

Unfortunately there seems, all too often, to be a real lack of political will to actually take that step forward. Ugh. I have a friend who was in the military at the time of the Rwandan genocide. The stories he tells are absolutely heart-breaking, and most of them, right at the core of them, come down to these things being allowed to happen because the UN guy in charge believed that a signature on a treaty would stop the bad guys. ><

We need to remember WWII. But that should absolutely not be the be-all and end-all of it, because this stuff, sadly, does keep happening. The lessons of WWII need to be kept at the forefront of our minds.

Doesn't do any bloody good if no one then acts on that knowledge, though. Bah.

The Holocaust is the one people still care about because it's the one people have managed to create a lasting impression of. I think ideally every similar event should evoke the same reaction, but the Holocaust is the one that successfully does on a broader scale. I also think that's a much better effect than no such event continuing to have a strong impact. People's emotions and memories work in complicated ways. Governments and individuals work extremely hard to maintain the level of awareness of the Holocaust among ordinary people, and I think it's a triumph. The other events in history should be acknowledged the same way, but the impressions of the Holocaust shouldn't be cut down because of that.

this, +1, etc.

I agree with this completely.

I think all genocide is appalling

I still think Nazi uniforms are hot

I don't see a conflict here
