You're not the first to say that. Fact is, despite the fact they both are in the business of animated film, they're just very different and hard to compare.

Not to mention that Japanese and American animation have been in a feedback loop since WWII, and especially now with John Lasseter as the Chief Creative Officer of both Pixar and Disney since 2006.

Agreed.

They're not that different-- both are family-friendly fantasy animation. Miyazaki has interesting storylines, in-depth characterizations, meaningful emotional situations and Disney, for the most part, doesn't. I say this as someone who grew up loving Disney movies.

Disney gets points for being the trailblazer, without which, we most likely would not have had Ghibli, and for putting out more stuff. That being said, yeah, Ghibli's put out some pretty awesome movies.

I wonder if Disney could make a movie like Totoro - just two little girls exploring their life. No real plot or objective, just living.

/Haven't seen Spirited Away.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2012-06-18 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I think Pixar might get there eventually. (I kinda wish that Pixar would spawn an animated Miramax, a brand to produce and distribute the weird and quirky.) Up! was better loved for its setup than its third-act conflict. It seems to be often the case that Pixar films work better setting up the magical world they portray than exploring conflict.

But driving the market the other way, is a lot of "CIRCUS AFRO! CIRCUS AFRO! POLKA DOT! POLKA DOT! POLKA DOT! AFRO!" Miyazaki has a beautiful gift for magical realism that doesn't drive relentlessly from gag to gag.

This isn't an unpopular opinion..

I've only seen Spirited Away and Ponyo, I really should check out more of these films, they can be weird to watch when you are so used to standard Western cartoon formula.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-18 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen

Kiki's Delivery Service
My Neighbor Totoro
Spirited Away
Howl's Moving Castle
The Secret World of Arietty

Which other ones are must-sees?

Oh FUCK YEAH!!

I've always thought that, Ghibli is thousand of times better than Disney.

It seems a bit like comparing apples and oranges to me, but if you think one is better than the other, cool. (I love both so I can't judge)

(Anonymous) 2012-06-19 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen all the Ghibli films and personally, I think they're incredibly over-rated. It's almost a festival of how many weird and quirky things they can slap into the scenes, whilst following what is essentially the very basic "love" (and not in a romance kind of why) based plots. I can't say I enjoy them much and I can never speak out about it because holy shit anime fans hound on you like you like you just bashed god in the southern states.

I'm not much of a Disney's animated fan either though.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-19 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly, Ghibli just bores the shit out of me. Love the stories, love the characters. Just... OMG... move the story along already -_-;

(Anonymous) 2012-06-19 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
I love them both. /shrug

See, the thing is - Disney has become kind of commercial and formulaic in recent decades, yeah, but it's also been making films since the late 30s. Studio Ghibli was founded in 1985. Any studio that's been going for nigh-on eighty years is going to have ups and downs and produce some less-than-creative films and start to develop a formula, plus many Disney films were made pre-feminism, so, y'know.

IMO early Disney - like, Snow White, Pinocchio (<3 Pinocchio), Fantasia, that sort of period - was every bit as new and creative and intriguing as Ghibli, but now that they're all classics films that everyone and his wife knows, it doesn't show so much. When people do the Ghibli vs Disney debate they tend to be talking about the films they're making now which I don't think is really fair. Disney hasn't really had a chance to reach its full potential since maybe Fantasia 2000.

I don't get the Studio X vs Studio Y thing anyway. Disney has made some great animated films, Ghibli has made some great animated films, Dreamworks has made some great animated films, etc., and you can acknowledge that a studio has made some good films without having to like all their films.

Never seen Studio Ghibli but love Disney.

Can't you just love both, not one or the other?

YES! To me Disney just feels like they follow the same boring story formula with cliche characters in every film. Ghibli's works are strange, original, fantastic and keep me entertrained and surprised.
