General rant: If I read one more fic that employs the word "ghosting" or any variation of the word "ghost" used as a verb, I'm going to....well, I don't know what, but I'm going to be really mad.

IT'S NOT ACTUALLY A REQUIREMENT THAT YOUR FIC INCLUDE THAT WORD. TRY TO THINK OF SOME SYNONYMS FOR "MOVE LIGHTLY ACROSS THE SURFACE OF" THANKS IN ADVANCE.

...I've never actually seen this before. Is this a fandom specific thing?

It's definitely not a fandom specific thing. I've seen it in fics from several of my fandoms.

I've only seen this in military gaming slang. Usually to describe scouting or killing another player.

"he lightly ghosted his fingers cross her hip before reaching her curveous buttocks..."

or

"he ghosted along his length, drawing forth a gasp"?

Now that you mention it that does sound like something I have read on weepingcock. But I don't think I've encountered it outside of there. Different strokes for different fandoms I guess?

/maybe I don't notice because it doesn't bother me?

I don't mind ghost much except when the author uses it for every light touch, like once every 100-200 words

obviously length is cock. you need to read more bad!fics.

I'm sure I've read this somewhere, but not at all very often. I don't think it's pervasive, at least in my experience.

We all have words that we dislike. Ghosting as a descriptive term is one I actually like because it's different and new and it conjures very intimate images for me.

yeah I like that word too. It's a good word.

I've only seen that word in one fic, and I think it was only used once. I didn't mind it.

I love this rant. Ghosted and boneless are my two most hated words in fic EVER.

Wow, "boneless" is overused in fic? In what kind of conext is the word used? (Cause, um, unless you'rereferring to poultry...)

The weirdest things become ~trends in fics. Even worse, IMO, is repeatedly using "cried" instead of "said". It just reeks of badfic...

That's strange. To me the term "ghosting" is when someone is watching a stream (usually gaming) and playing against/with that person to give them an advantage. As in they're like a ghost being able to see everything, but the player can't see them.

Ghosting is a perfectly cromulant word.

looks like fanfiction has embiggened its usage too much for that anon, though!

All of a sudden, I'm glad that a large chunk of my fanwriting and -reading is in a fandom in which that would be ambiguous and confusing, so no one does it.

(Just because I watched "Danny Phantom" today and no one else has posted it...)

So much this. It's rampant in my fandom's fic.

I'd also like to nominate 'blown' and 'clashing' (as in: 'pupils blown wide' and 'teeth clashing together') as two more fanfic!sex!words I'd happily never see again.

wait let me grab the hairdryer to better blow pupils wide open and mouthguards to protect against the clashing teeth!

I liked the "pupils blown wide with lust" thing when I first read it, but then I read it in, like, every Avengers fic ever. It's a little tired now. I like when authors describe the other physical aspects of arousal rather than just the weeping cock, but it's time for a new metaphor or something. I like "pupils belladonna wide like a 16th century lady." ;P
