She wasn't the typical "not really caring about anything but love" Disney princess.

I see this thrown around a lot, but how true is it, really?

Yeah, Belle and Ariel both had dreams and ambitions too, so did Mulan.

SA

To specify, I'm talking about the other "typical" princesses. I keep seeing that "not really caring about anything but love" thrown at them, but how true is that?

Hmm, well Snow White definitely only cared about finding a man thats all she ever sang and talked about, and so did Cinderella I think. I never saw Sleeping Beauty so I have no idea about her?

But I feel people are too harsh on those early princesses, ESPECIALLY on poor Snow White. It was the 1930s people, women's liberation wasn't going to happen for another 30/40 years. Without Snow White there would be no Disney princesses, so people gotta show her some respect.

Plus the fact that she's 14/15 and her story takes place in the 14th/15th centuries, so it's not like she ever would have been even remotely expose to what's common place today.

...That movie terrified me as a child, though. :P

ME TOO. The forest scene was traumatizing.

Sleeping Beauty wasn't really about the title character. It was really about the three fairies (...okay, that may not be the official story, but those three absolutely owned the whole film). Aurora didn't even have ambitions for love, that much. She did fall for the prince, but that happened entirely independently of her running afoul of Maleficent. In fact, she's not really responsible for anything, good or bad, that happens in that whole movie.

The three fairies are really great, though. And...BLUE. ;)

YOUR COLOREDY TEXT will get you YOUR COLOREDY TEXT. Also, HTML only recognizes American colOrs. Because it is evil and not-multi-cultural that way.

PS: BLUE! ;)

Nayrt

From what I remember about Cinderella, a lot of her characterization revolves around, "I'm going to try to remain happy even though I live in a horribly abusive household and my only friends are animals." So I don't really think it's fair to say that she only wanted a man, because that whole "finding a prince who loves me" is kind of tied into how terrible her home-life was.

Sleeping Beauty was pretty bad though. She didn't really have any characterization. But I think that's more because she's not even really the main character of the movie (the main characters are the fairies, jsyk).

Cinderella was doing to her best to not be thrown into the streets. She wanted ONE night to dress up and go to a real ball and dance and be merry. Meeting her True Love was the last thing on her mind.

This. Really, none of the princesses apart from Snow White were love-obsessed at all. They all just happened to fall in love during their movies.
