I really like Tiana as a princess. She wasn't the typical "not really caring about anything but love" Disney princess. She had dreams and ambitions. I thought she was a really interesting character. I totally can see the borderline racist thing, but Tiana herself was a pretty cool character.

I see this thrown around a lot, but how true is it, really?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-18 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Belle and Ariel both had dreams and ambitions too, so did Mulan.

SA

To specify, I'm talking about the other "typical" princesses. I keep seeing that "not really caring about anything but love" thrown at them, but how true is that?

Hmm, well Snow White definitely only cared about finding a man thats all she ever sang and talked about, and so did Cinderella I think. I never saw Sleeping Beauty so I have no idea about her?

But I feel people are too harsh on those early princesses, ESPECIALLY on poor Snow White. It was the 1930s people, women's liberation wasn't going to happen for another 30/40 years. Without Snow White there would be no Disney princesses, so people gotta show her some respect.

Plus the fact that she's 14/15 and her story takes place in the 14th/15th centuries, so it's not like she ever would have been even remotely expose to what's common place today.

...That movie terrified me as a child, though. :P

Sleeping Beauty wasn't really about the title character. It was really about the three fairies (...okay, that may not be the official story, but those three absolutely owned the whole film). Aurora didn't even have ambitions for love, that much. She did fall for the prince, but that happened entirely independently of her running afoul of Maleficent. In fact, she's not really responsible for anything, good or bad, that happens in that whole movie.

The three fairies are really great, though. And...BLUE. ;)

Nayrt

From what I remember about Cinderella, a lot of her characterization revolves around, "I'm going to try to remain happy even though I live in a horribly abusive household and my only friends are animals." So I don't really think it's fair to say that she only wanted a man, because that whole "finding a prince who loves me" is kind of tied into how terrible her home-life was.

Sleeping Beauty was pretty bad though. She didn't really have any characterization. But I think that's more because she's not even really the main character of the movie (the main characters are the fairies, jsyk).

Cinderella was doing to her best to not be thrown into the streets. She wanted ONE night to dress up and go to a real ball and dance and be merry. Meeting her True Love was the last thing on her mind.

There have actually been quite a few Disney princesses who cared about things besides love. Actually, the "typical Disney princess" stereotype isn't really all that typical. I can think of maybe two Disney princesses who didn't have any dreams or ambitions outside of "prince = good."

But I do think they did a good job with Tiana by clearly delineating her personal goals outside of her love story.

She wasn't the typical "not really caring about anything but love" Disney princess. She had dreams and ambitions.

Out of the...well, now 11 Princesses, only 3 cared about love, but 2 of those wanted something more than that.

Jasmine wanted to marry for love, but she wanted to live her own life, and wanted to escape the confinement of the palace.

Aurora just wanted someone else to talk to besides animals and her three guardians. Damn, she freaked out when Prince Philip, a stranger, was suddenly dancing with her.

As for the other Princesses:

[Cinderella] - Doing to her best to not be thrown into the streets. She wanted ONE night to dress up and go to a real ball and dance and be merry. Meeting her True Love was the last thing on her mind.

[Ariel] - Hell, she would have just been happy to spend a DAY as a human before she fell in love with Eric. Falling in love with Eric only strengthened her resolve to want to be "Part of That World".

[Belle] - She tells you what she wants: "I want more than this provincial life! I want adventure in the great wide, somewhere, I want it more than I can tell." She does say that she would like to meet someone who understood her, but that doesn't necessarily mean a man. And the Beast sure as hell didn't understand her at the beginning.

[Pocahontas] - Didn't know what she wanted. I'm sure she wanted to please her father and marry Kocoum, but she wanted to follow her own path.

[Mulan] - She wanted to save her father and country.

[Rapunzel] - She wanted to leave her tower for the first time in her life (that she knew of) and go see some lanterns.

[Merida] - As King Fergus put it, as Merida: "I don't want to get married, I want to stay single and let my hair flow in the wind as I ride through the glen firing arrows into the sunset."

I agree that it sucked that Tiana was a frog for 90% of the movie, but modern Disney loves their twists on classics.

The problem with Aurora is that she (and the prince) have zero character. The movie should have been re-titled Maleficient vs The Three Fairies.

"Maleficient vs The Three Fairies."

Best damn movie I ever saw. I hope we get more films like this.

I was excited for the live action movie with Angelina Jolie as Maleficent...until I found out that the fairies aren't going to be called Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather.

And I don't understand why they aren't going to be going by those names, when they are still using Maleficent.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-19 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of the earlier movies were like that though. The two leads were boring and the side characters got to be interesting. At least Phillip actually did something badass.

Only due to the help of the fairies. Otherwise, he'd have been toast. So, once again, the fairies were the true heroes in defeating Maleficent.

Hell, THEY sent the sword flying into her.

I actually feel REALLY badly for Aurora. She had just met this guy, feel for him, when suddenly OOPS! Sorry, you're a princess and you're engaged and your whole life has been basically a lie up until now, because we had to protect you from a witch who wants you dead. Happy 16th Birthday!

It's amazing that she only cried when she reached the castle and not had an entire mental break down.

...Aurora is honestly my favourite Disney princess. I can't explain why. xD I tend to be drawn to characters (particularly female characters) that need fleshing out, I guess?

ITA.
The Prince's own father had more presence in the movie than his son or the title character.

Maleficent, and Flora and Merryweather's bickering is what really made the movie enjoyable for me.

The prince's horse was pretty awesome - not "Tangled"-level, but good.

mulan wasn't a princess in any way, shape, or form

(Anonymous) 2012-06-19 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
So people have to argue this every time it comes up? She's a Disney Princess. It's not a Royal title it's a marketing title.

Tell that to Disney. She's part of the Disney Princess line-up, making her a Disney Princess.

I'm a little surprised someone on FS didn't know this :/

I agree. I liked Tiana because she worked hard to get to her goal instead of just hanging around wishing and singing about how much she wants a prince like the some of the other Disney princesses! She felt more real to me because of that.

Actually, I liked Cinderella too though.
