Wow...I almost agree (Only because I saw this once and hated it, so I don't remember how many stereotypes it descended into, because we know it did).

I was just thinking today "Hey, Tiana didn't really own an animal sidekick...because they turned her into a frog."

There's nothing wrong with noticing things like this and pointing them out.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-18 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Why couldn't they have just made Naveen black? There are black people in Europe too.
Though I suppose, given this was 1920s America, that would have made Charlotte not want to marry him like she did?

I really like Tiana as a princess. She wasn't the typical "not really caring about anything but love" Disney princess. She had dreams and ambitions. I thought she was a really interesting character. I totally can see the borderline racist thing, but Tiana herself was a pretty cool character.

There have actually been quite a few Disney princesses who cared about things besides love. Actually, the "typical Disney princess" stereotype isn't really all that typical. I can think of maybe two Disney princesses who didn't have any dreams or ambitions outside of "prince = good."

But I do think they did a good job with Tiana by clearly delineating her personal goals outside of her love story.

She wasn't the typical "not really caring about anything but love" Disney princess. She had dreams and ambitions.

Out of the...well, now 11 Princesses, only 3 cared about love, but 2 of those wanted something more than that.

Jasmine wanted to marry for love, but she wanted to live her own life, and wanted to escape the confinement of the palace.

Aurora just wanted someone else to talk to besides animals and her three guardians. Damn, she freaked out when Prince Philip, a stranger, was suddenly dancing with her.

As for the other Princesses:

[Cinderella] - Doing to her best to not be thrown into the streets. She wanted ONE night to dress up and go to a real ball and dance and be merry. Meeting her True Love was the last thing on her mind.

[Ariel] - Hell, she would have just been happy to spend a DAY as a human before she fell in love with Eric. Falling in love with Eric only strengthened her resolve to want to be "Part of That World".

[Belle] - She tells you what she wants: "I want more than this provincial life! I want adventure in the great wide, somewhere, I want it more than I can tell." She does say that she would like to meet someone who understood her, but that doesn't necessarily mean a man. And the Beast sure as hell didn't understand her at the beginning.

[Pocahontas] - Didn't know what she wanted. I'm sure she wanted to please her father and marry Kocoum, but she wanted to follow her own path.

[Mulan] - She wanted to save her father and country.

[Rapunzel] - She wanted to leave her tower for the first time in her life (that she knew of) and go see some lanterns.

[Merida] - As King Fergus put it, as Merida: "I don't want to get married, I want to stay single and let my hair flow in the wind as I ride through the glen firing arrows into the sunset."

I agree that it sucked that Tiana was a frog for 90% of the movie, but modern Disney loves their twists on classics.

I agree. I liked Tiana because she worked hard to get to her goal instead of just hanging around wishing and singing about how much she wants a prince like the some of the other Disney princesses! She felt more real to me because of that.

Actually, I liked Cinderella too though.

From what I understand his race/ethnicity was purposely very ambiguous. His country of origin is fictional and his accent is French.

If she hadn't been a frog, maybe there would have been more interesting things going on in the plot, too. Most of the frog sequences were dull as hell (even the animation was kind of...listless.)

(Anonymous) 2012-06-19 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Well...not really disagreeing with you, but in the interests of fairness...1920's New Orleans? There *was* a lot of racism at the time, including, iirc, segregation. So some of the stereotypes [namely being in a serving position/being considered lower class] would have been the case, sadly. It wasn't exactly accurate with how it would have been at the time period, but they may have been trying to make a half-hearted attempt to throw some kind of history into the mix with that bit.

That said, while I enjoyed the film as a bit fluff, I do think it could have been more interesting if she hadn't been turned into a frog.

I kinda half-saw it, but the thing I hoped for the most (before the movie came out) was for her to remain human while trying to help the dude frog (Naveem?) to find a princess and turn back into human (and neither of them really knowing it was supposed to be the kiss of their true love). And then they would eventually fall in love because that's how the story goes. Kinda like Beauty and the Beast but with more frogs.

Totally agree. I watched the movie with excitement and fell in love with both Tiana and Naveen until they turned them into frogs and then I was just bored until the end of the movie.

Call me specieist but I'd rather watch pretty people than pretty frogs.

I guess what I'm curious about is which parts seemed stereotypical to people and which parts came across as attempts to integrate black New Orleans culture from the time period. Because I watched it and enjoyed her character, the (small) nods to historical accuracy, and all the New Orleans food stuff. But I know some people thought of it as borderline racist. So...which parts seemed "off" to any of you who feel like sharing with me?

I don't think it matters how this movie was made - frog for half the movie, full movie, one's a frog and one's not, etc etc...the fact that it was the Disney movie with the 'first black princess' pretty much ensured people would be looking for something to call racist.

You're not the only one. It very much felt like someone at Disney was like, "Hm, people have been accusing us of being racist because we haven't had a black princess yet. I guess we should make one... There's black people in New Orleans, right?" Ugh. To me they dropped the ball with TPatF. It could have been so much better than it was. So much wasted potential. :(

(Anonymous) 2012-06-19 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
“I love animation because in the world of animation, you can be anything you wanna be. If you’re a fat woman, you can play a skinny princess. If you’re a short, wimpy guy, you can play a tall gladiator. If you’re a white man, you can play an Arabian prince. And if you’re a black man, you can play a donkey or a zebra.” - Chris Rock

Just thought of that...

Tiana was beautiful and awesome and badass. She was the black princess I have been hoping since I was four years old. I think Disney got everything right with her and the setting even if other things about the movie left something to be desired - they worked so hard on her design and her character as an ambitious young black woman in 1920s New Orleans. And then they turned her into a fucking frog and dropped her in a swamp.

Disney: Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
