She wasn't the typical "not really caring about anything but love" Disney princess. She had dreams and ambitions.

Out of the...well, now 11 Princesses, only 3 cared about love, but 2 of those wanted something more than that.

Jasmine wanted to marry for love, but she wanted to live her own life, and wanted to escape the confinement of the palace.

Aurora just wanted someone else to talk to besides animals and her three guardians. Damn, she freaked out when Prince Philip, a stranger, was suddenly dancing with her.

As for the other Princesses:

[Cinderella] - Doing to her best to not be thrown into the streets. She wanted ONE night to dress up and go to a real ball and dance and be merry. Meeting her True Love was the last thing on her mind.

[Ariel] - Hell, she would have just been happy to spend a DAY as a human before she fell in love with Eric. Falling in love with Eric only strengthened her resolve to want to be "Part of That World".

[Belle] - She tells you what she wants: "I want more than this provincial life! I want adventure in the great wide, somewhere, I want it more than I can tell." She does say that she would like to meet someone who understood her, but that doesn't necessarily mean a man. And the Beast sure as hell didn't understand her at the beginning.

[Pocahontas] - Didn't know what she wanted. I'm sure she wanted to please her father and marry Kocoum, but she wanted to follow her own path.

[Mulan] - She wanted to save her father and country.

[Rapunzel] - She wanted to leave her tower for the first time in her life (that she knew of) and go see some lanterns.

[Merida] - As King Fergus put it, as Merida: "I don't want to get married, I want to stay single and let my hair flow in the wind as I ride through the glen firing arrows into the sunset."

I agree that it sucked that Tiana was a frog for 90% of the movie, but modern Disney loves their twists on classics.

The problem with Aurora is that she (and the prince) have zero character. The movie should have been re-titled Maleficient vs The Three Fairies.

"Maleficient vs The Three Fairies."

Best damn movie I ever saw. I hope we get more films like this.

I was excited for the live action movie with Angelina Jolie as Maleficent...until I found out that the fairies aren't going to be called Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather.

And I don't understand why they aren't going to be going by those names, when they are still using Maleficent.

A lot of the earlier movies were like that though. The two leads were boring and the side characters got to be interesting. At least Phillip actually did something badass.

Only due to the help of the fairies. Otherwise, he'd have been toast. So, once again, the fairies were the true heroes in defeating Maleficent.

Hell, THEY sent the sword flying into her.

I actually feel REALLY badly for Aurora. She had just met this guy, feel for him, when suddenly OOPS! Sorry, you're a princess and you're engaged and your whole life has been basically a lie up until now, because we had to protect you from a witch who wants you dead. Happy 16th Birthday!

It's amazing that she only cried when she reached the castle and not had an entire mental break down.

...Aurora is honestly my favourite Disney princess. I can't explain why. xD I tend to be drawn to characters (particularly female characters) that need fleshing out, I guess?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-19 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
You mean really needs to be fleshed out. She only gets four character traits and all of them come from other people. 1) Royalty 2) Pretty 3) Can sing 4) Cursed. In other words, born in to it, fairy gift, fairy gift, curse she knows nothing about so it causes no change in her character.

Again, I tend to be drawn to characters like that. I think it's partly that they make me curious as to what might be going on in their heads, partly that they're blank slates I can project myself onto, and partly that female characters with no agency frustrate me so I like to give them agency.

Also, Once Upon a Dream is one of my favourite Disney songs, sooo.

ITA.
The Prince's own father had more presence in the movie than his son or the title character.

Maleficent, and Flora and Merryweather's bickering is what really made the movie enjoyable for me.

The prince's horse was pretty awesome - not "Tangled"-level, but good.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-19 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
mulan wasn't a princess in any way, shape, or form

(Anonymous) 2012-06-19 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
So people have to argue this every time it comes up? She's a Disney Princess. It's not a Royal title it's a marketing title.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-19 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
okai your royal highness

[personal profile] ladylittlemonster 2012-06-19 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Tell that to Disney. She's part of the Disney Princess line-up, making her a Disney Princess.

I'm a little surprised someone on FS didn't know this :/

(Anonymous) 2012-06-19 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
not everyone is american and not everyone plays with fugly dolls (or knows people who play with them) :\

(Anonymous) 2012-06-19 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
what? what does her being american got to do with anything? or with dolls? or is this an attempt at a comeback?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-20 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
who do you mean by her?

I'm making a point that not everyone who watches disney movies are american. people in other countries, especially non-english speaking countries, are unlikely to know that "Disney Princess" refers to specific female characters. for them, mulan is just another girl from a disney film, no different from belle in "beauty and the beast" or esmeralda in "hunchback of notre dame".

unless they are familiar with dolls, sing-along videos and other girls' products from "the Disney Princess line-up", all the merchandise are just more "disney tie-in toys".

does this answer all your questions?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-21 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
then what was with the snotty attitude? you were insinuating that she was just some american who plays with "fugly" dolls.

tbh, i was also surprised that there was one person on here who didn't know that mulan wasn't considered a dp. she's been one since the line for awhile now, and this isn't the first time we've had secrets about the princesses, and how mulan would always come up.

disney movies are VERY popular around the world, especially in japan. they have disney stores in canada, denmark, the uk, ireland, france, spain, italy, portugal, belgium, australia and japan, and they all carry the dp line. on the store sites, you have to click "disney princess" to get to the mulan merchandise.

please do little more research before making unfounded assumptions and denying facts/

and if you don't want to, then why comment in this thread?

also, there are disney parks all over the world. there is one in japan, paris, hong kong, and they are working on one in Shanghai, so I don't think you need to worry about non-english people not knowing about the disney princesses.

don't assume that they don't know about who is in the disney princess line-up. disney movies are in theaters around the world, and if they are fans, then I highly doubt they don't know about the disney princess line-up.

If you don't watch the movies, why comment?

If you watch the movies, you don't get to play the ignorant card. You know what's in them.

I don't watch Bollywood films and don't know the tropes, so I don't comment on them. Easy peasy.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-24 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
gosh I watch the movies but none of them have a "this is a disney princess movie" stamp

what is the difference between mulan and beauty? this is not a trope, it is a marketing decision
