I guess what I'm curious about is which parts seemed stereotypical to people and which parts came across as attempts to integrate black New Orleans culture from the time period. Because I watched it and enjoyed her character, the (small) nods to historical accuracy, and all the New Orleans food stuff. But I know some people thought of it as borderline racist. So...which parts seemed "off" to any of you who feel like sharing with me?

It failed, as a single movie, to make up for the lack of decent animated movies featuring major and lead black characters throughout all of film history.

There is the theory that Disney made Tiana a frog for half the movie to cut down on the time the audience saw a black character on screen, but I find that a stretch that, and in any case, it doesn't ruin the time she was human on screen.

Yeah, that's stretching. This is hardly the first "X transformed into intelligent animal y" movie.

That's not high expectations at all I guess.

The most racist part of it for me was Ray the firefly and those rabid guys in the swamp. Ray was an excellent character, but holy shameless caricatures, Batman. I don't care that they were white (Ray being voiced by a white guy), it came off as a glaring reminder of how media used to (and sometimes still does) characterize black people, as drooling, drawling sidekicks and villains with no intelligence whatsoever, even if they had hearts of gold and died saving the white heroes. That shit needs to be eradicated, not color-switched.
