Well. Anyone who has spent time online during the last ten years has come across a statistically crazily improbable number of people struggling with (in roughly chronologial order) depression, bisexuality, Asperger's, various personality disorders, asexuality, transgenderism, sociopathy...

This is just the newest fad. Wait a year and something else has come to take its place. Due to the rise of creepy SJWs I bet the next big thing is going to be Racial Dysmorphic Disorder, a new fashionable subset of BDD. In plain english: a bunch of white college girls claiming to secretly be Persons of Color (because everybody knows there are only two types of people in the world: White and Not White).

(Anonymous) 2012-06-19 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
It already happened, there's this one person on tumblr who's white as can be but claims to be "transasian" and "Korean on the inside. They've already been mentioned up thread, and you can find them by looking up the transethnic on tumblr. It's really pathetic tbh, because countless people have tried to explain that's it's both offensive and privileged to claim that, but they keep insisting, "it's their true self."

Wow, it's like the extreme version of teenage girls who pretend to be Japanese on the internet. Because it's "kawaii", don'tcha know...

I do not understand.

Who cares? If it makes SJW's upset, it's a funny thing. Probably not a good thing, but a funny thing.

I want to slap that girl.

Already exists! (http://sf-drama.livejournal.com/3334840.html)

This is so so very terrifying.

I'm aware that many people are faking those things, or, more charitably, incorrectly believe they have them. It's also possible, though, that the fandom population in general is skewed toward queer people and people with mental illnesses- the stereotype of fandom is basically a queer community with more nerdiness and less casual sex, and depending on the mental illness, internet socialization might be easier.

I just hate the "all these people are fakers" attitude, really. I don't really say this off-anon, but I have borderline (diagnosed by a mental health professional, not the internet). It's not something I want to brag about, and after a lot of therapy I've gotten way better control of it and I don't think people would know just from talking to me. But at the same time, before I got diagnosed, I didn't know what was wrong or what to look out for and I made a lot of mistakes, and that's sort of an important thing about my history that I'd like my close friends to know. It's hard to do when people assume you're faking it for attention, though.

...borderline what?

sorry, I agree with everything you're saying, but that threw me off

Anon is probably talking about Borderline Personality Disorder.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-19 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, thanks!

(Anonymous) 2012-06-19 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Different anon-
I expect that's borderline personality disorder, which gets abbreviated pretty often.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-19 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you!

Thank you. The internet is teaching me things. :0

I don't think otherkin will ever vanish, simply because it's such a convenient fantasy? I know when I was a teenager I pretended to be an angel and shit and when I found feathers on my pillow (LOL IT'S A PILLOW WHAT DO YOU EXPECT) I claimed how that was ~proof~ that I had been travelling in angel form in my sleep or something.

That was a looooooong time ago and I'd never heard of the term otherkin back then.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-19 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
at least you know it's a fantasy...

(Anonymous) 2012-06-19 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Aaww that's very cute. I like your white cat! Apologies if the white cat is your soul or something...

Haha, very funny! :P Unfortunately I can't claim any credit of the picture, it's just something I stumbled upon somewhere, sometime.

LOL IT'S A PILLOW WHAT DO YOU EXPECT

This is cracking me up a lot. I apologise to your teenage self.

I hope you are a troll, but if you're not...

Late comment is very late, but: you do realize that all of those things actually exist, right? Like, sure some people will fake them for attention, but that doesn't mean ALL people who claim to have them/be that way are faking it. It's incredibly disrespectful to imply so.

And I'm shocked that you put bisexuality and asexuality on that list. Like, do you REALLY not think those things are real? some people are attracted to both men and women, and some people aren't attracted to anyone at all. This isn't rocket science. If you believe some people are homosexual (which it would seem you do, since that isn't included in the list) then why is it so hard to believe some people are bi- or asexual? Frankly I'm surprised someone hasn't called you on that already.

But the rest of the things on your list also do exist. I have depression myself, though it's well-medicated (fortunately for me - some people have a really hard time finding a medication that works for them). It's medicated because there is an imbalance of neurotransmitters in my brain. Like, this is a real physical thing. And is it so much of a stretch to think that maybe there are proportionally more people with depression (and other psychological disorders or anomalies) on the Internet, with its comforts of anonymity and ease, and with the plethora of people ready and willing to make friends with complete strangers?
