I'm aware that many people are faking those things, or, more charitably, incorrectly believe they have them. It's also possible, though, that the fandom population in general is skewed toward queer people and people with mental illnesses- the stereotype of fandom is basically a queer community with more nerdiness and less casual sex, and depending on the mental illness, internet socialization might be easier.

I just hate the "all these people are fakers" attitude, really. I don't really say this off-anon, but I have borderline (diagnosed by a mental health professional, not the internet). It's not something I want to brag about, and after a lot of therapy I've gotten way better control of it and I don't think people would know just from talking to me. But at the same time, before I got diagnosed, I didn't know what was wrong or what to look out for and I made a lot of mistakes, and that's sort of an important thing about my history that I'd like my close friends to know. It's hard to do when people assume you're faking it for attention, though.
