I think you may be projecting a little here. Holmes isn't canon asexual. He shows a lot of signs of it and I'll certainly take that interpretation, but demisexual or just 'not interested in actively pursing sex but wouldn't kick Lestrade/Irene/Watson/Mary Morstan out of bed for eating crackers' is also valid.

That's the impression I had from the books (which is the only Holmes canon I know.) He certainly could be asexual but it's far from ridiculous to say he isn't.

He's not that interested in women, but that could mean gay, asexual, misogynist, or just...not really caring.

True, Watson remarks on his lack of interest in women. But I still wouldn't say someone who shipped him with a woman had him OOC if they did it right. (I don't read Holmes fic though. Because I'm just not all into Holmes/Watson myself, not sure why. Unlike the OP though I don't want the world to stop writing it.)

Depending on canon I'm all for Watson/Holmes/Mary OT3.

Watson actually kind of ships Holmes with a woman in "The Copper Beeches." It's cute.

Holmes isn't interested, of course, but it does suggest that Watson doesn't find the idea completely absurd, as one would if one knew one's friend was absolutely gay, aromantic, etc. (...to whatever extent a man would understand and except this about his friend in the Victorian era?)

I remember that, now that you mention it! And yeah, if it were impossible for Holmes to be interested in a woman Watson didn't seem to realize it -- though yeah, maybe he wouldn't. I can see Holmes as all sorts of basic orientations, theoretically.

I didn't say it was an orientation. I'm not sure what I'd class it as, I don't know much about it.

It's a term that kids on tumblr use to feel special about themselves, and it's seen as slut-shaming and queer-appropriating by just about everybody else, fyi. If you want to say that Holmes might be interested in a romantic relationship but wouldn't be immediately ready for sex, then you can just say that.

No, it isn't normal. A demisexual would be a person who is effectively asexual until they achieve a close bond. Most people are, in fact, aware of having sexual attraction to people regardless of whether or not they've ever been in romantic relationship.

I imagine it can be rather awkward for a person to consider themselves asexual due to lack of sexual attraction, only to get into a close relationship and suddenly have their body wake up and go, "Oh hello" towards their SO. Probably especially awkward if the SO is an asexual who thought they were entering a relationship with another asexual.

It's an expanded explanation of someone's sexuality. Some people need an emotional connection to feel physically attracted to someone. It's not an orientation in the traditional sense because orientations usually describe the gender of the people your attracted (this includes "not any genders", and "don't care about gender"). Demisexuality describes a condition under which attraction can occur.

No, but it is a descriptor.

Demisexuality just means that you're usually not physically attracted to people unless you have an emotional connection with them.

They're less likely to feel primary attraction (http://www.asexuality.org/wiki/index.php?title=Primary_vs._secondary_sexual_attraction_model), i.e. to look at pinups and drool over themselves. They're more likely to find people attractive based on personality rather than outside appearances. As a demi, I don't find most people attractive unless I get to know them, and such looking at "hot" guys or girls doesn't do anything for me.

Yes, it's technically something *most* people feel tbh, but it's the whole primary attraction bit that makes it a sexuality imo.
