If Gothel hadn't kidnapped Rapunzel from her parents or kept her locked up inside a tower I don't think she would have been seen as abusive.

The thing that gets me is how Gothel treats Rapunzel and the fact that she doesn't really love her. Every single affectionate gesture is related to Rapunzel's hair in some way, playing with it, stroking it, etc. If you watch the movie looking for this (which I have) you see that all the affection and love Gothel professes isn't towards Rapunzel, but instead towards Rapunzel's hair.

I actually really love how they did that, from a storytelling perspective, because it is pretty subtle until you are watching for it.

But that's just when it's fictional. Adding to the *hugs* for OP.

It's really great; honestly, it's a level of subtlety that I wouldn't expect from a Disney princess movie, but it's really noticeable when you sit down looking for it.

The whole "affection directed at the hair" thing really jumped in my face the first time I watched the movie (even the pet name "my flower" is fully related to it). It made me hate Gothel so much...

Ugh, so true. I also hate it when fics turn emotionally abusive parents or spouses into physically or sexually abusive ones, because it feels like it's cheapening and dismissing the very real harm that purely emotional abusive can do. Like it's not "real" abuse or something. Or that people who are wimps if they're upset and affected by emotional abuse if no one physically hurt them :(

I'm a Harry Potter fan, and let me tell you how infuriating it is to see so many fics that turn up the Dursleys' abuse of Harry from neglect/emotional abuse, like in canon, to regular beatings and/or sexual abuse, because apparently growing up in a closet, not being fed enough (in the first book, during the welcoming feast at Hogwarts, Harry off-handedly ponders that while he was never starved, he was never allowed to eat as much as he wanted :( ), allowing the other child in the household to beat you up whenever he pleases, rubbing in your face repeatedly how unloved and unwanted you are -- while the other child in the house is lavished in gifts and toys, receiving only hand-me-down when the family is clearly well-off and being dehumanized (it's always "boy" or "Potter", never "Harry") somehow isn't enough. :/

...I have feelings about this. :(

Well, to be fair, there WAS some physical abuse of Harry in canon (Vernon shaking him when angry, etc) but it was mostly emotional and I otherwise agree 100% with your comment. I haven't really thought about it (in HP context) before but you're right.

Well, THIS anon would still see her as abusive as fuck. The constant belittling, the obsessive control, the isolation, the demeaning, etc, etc - that's the abusive part.
