Guy owned a huge number of exotic animals.

Went crazy/depressed, killed himself after releasing them all, and the police had to shoot them to keep people safe. Was miraculous no one ended up dead.

Oh, well, shit, yeah, that makes me think of Animorphs, too. You can't just release exotic animals and expect them to be okay. People freak the fuck out, and they either get caged again or put down.

She's grown on me from my first read through the series, but that sounds suspiciously like ghostwritten!Cassie logic you've got there.

What happened to the animals was so tragic to me, but I really ended up feeling sorry for the police officers involved considering how people reacted toward them for doing there jobs. Even with endangered animals people have got to come first.
