It has been my own experience, that those who are most distressed by ableism... are 100 Percent Able Bodied Individuals! Which, frankly, boggles the damn mind.

You know, I have always wondered about that xD Like how many people getting pissed off and on their high horse about ableism are actually disabled in any way. It's really interesting to me when most friends of mine with a disability aren't really that bothered by it and will joke and etc, while people without disabilities lose their minds in rage when they sense maybe could be might be ableism.

It's just sorta fascinating to me.

Sorry my though kinda rambled off there @_@

I think it's just about not wanting to seem offensive, not about wanting to actually not be offensive. Maybe I'm just jaded because of ONTD, but it seems like people are more concerned about not being perceived as prejudiced by the ten majority people in the room rather than actually hurting the feelings of the one minority person. Y'know?

I hate that people then turn that into a reason to expect you, the non-majority, to follow their idea of not being offensive.

I'm from a majority/minority city, and I can't tell you the number of times I (and others from my area) have had to change our language because it's not considered "politically correct" (because I sometimes use black instead of African-American or say the word dreads). Or that I'm a rich, privileged whitey (never mind the fact that my father was the first person in his family to go to college or that I'm disabled, QUILTBAG, and didn't go to a school where I was a majority until college) who can't possibly understand any racial issues. And it's all by other whites. It's so aggravating that people assume you have the same background as they do and so you're being offensive because it would be offensive for them to say the same. I didn't grow up where you did, I don't have the same background as you do, and I have plenty of my own struggles, so don't assume the same made-up rules that apply to you apply to me.

..."QUILTBAG"? Really?

(Anonymous) 2012-06-23 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
You've never heard the term before? http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=QUILTBAG

GLBTQIA doesn't include "unidentified" and the order, to me, seems to be identifying them in a loaded way. QUILTBAG is in random order other than for acronym purposes, and it doesn't make me pause over the order of the last two letters. Also, it's just plain easier to remember. YMMV.

(because I sometimes use black instead of African-American or say the word dreads)

People who would find those things truly offensive don't live in the real world, IMO.

Yeah, I agree with this.

It's like people who complain about lack of POC or gay characters are mostly neither. SJ Warriors want to fight everyone else's fights, and it gets really ridiculous when you, someone who suffers from X, have to warn for things that you don't perceive as needing such. Or, worse, being expected to apologize for "ableist" language to the able-bodied (and minded).

There are a lot of people in fandom with disabilities, but, strangely, you don't see all that many of them complaining about it.

omg, yes, this pisses me off so fucking much. Like, thank you, self-righteous SJW folk, I don't need you to fight my battles for me with your incomplete knowledge and understanding of what's going on here.

Perhaps because when they are in fandom they want to talk about fandom-related things?
Like compare favourite characters, analyze plot developments, discuss the world-building...
