(Anonymous) 2012-06-23 04:14 am (UTC)(link)I'm from a majority/minority city, and I can't tell you the number of times I (and others from my area) have had to change our language because it's not considered "politically correct" (because I sometimes use black instead of African-American or say the word dreads). Or that I'm a rich, privileged whitey (never mind the fact that my father was the first person in his family to go to college or that I'm disabled, QUILTBAG, and didn't go to a school where I was a majority until college) who can't possibly understand any racial issues. And it's all by other whites. It's so aggravating that people assume you have the same background as they do and so you're being offensive because it would be offensive for them to say the same. I didn't grow up where you did, I don't have the same background as you do, and I have plenty of my own struggles, so don't assume the same made-up rules that apply to you apply to me.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-23 04:25 am (UTC)(link)GLBTQIA doesn't include "unidentified" and the order, to me, seems to be identifying them in a loaded way. QUILTBAG is in random order other than for acronym purposes, and it doesn't make me pause over the order of the last two letters. Also, it's just plain easier to remember. YMMV.
