I'm going to go against everyone else in this thread and tell you that maybe you shouldn't let others define your relationship to your mother.

forget what fandom says. Take a good look at your real feelings (not what fandom tells you to feel!) and at your actual situation and then act in a manner that is right for you. You are the only one who knows what you are really going through and fandom (who see everything in black or white and in absolutes and cant seem to accept that there is complexity to human behaviour) is in no way an objective or neutral reference.

and if, after putting fandom aside, your mother is truly abusive, then you should probably seek some help to get you out of this situation (I know that this is easier said than done).

Surprisingly though, I kinda agree to this. Life isn't only black and white as fandom always portrays. Mostly it's just different shades of grey. Even though there are many people out there who want to guide you and help you (gold stars for everyone!) ultimately the choice rests with you and you alone on what you have - or want - to do.

Agreed. The only person who knows 100 percent of what's going on in OP's relationship with her mother is OP. Life isn't black and white, and it worries me to think that someone might draw a parallel between their mother and Gothel for some qualities (ie, overly-protective to an extreme), but maybe not all (ie, is the mother doing the same thing as that whole business of Gothel's subtle but constant jabs at Rapunzel's self-worth in order to keep her close). And then letting fandom form a conclusion that, in reality is far more complex and serious to handle.

OP, I hope there's someone you can talk to who might be able to help you sort out and navigate your relationship with your mother until you're able to get out on your own. In the meantime, just please be cautious about letting fandom and internet strangers define your relationships and your life.
