Hi, asexual person reporting in here.

I don't think it's offensive to ship canon asexual characters. I do it, I have asexual friends who do it. In fact, I know a lot of asexual people, and you are honestly the first asexual person I've heard to have a problem with it.

It does bother me when canon takes away asexual representation by writing the character as sexually attracted. (cough cough the Doctor.)

In fanworks? Pfft. Have at it. Don't like, don't read, etc etc.

I don't personally have a problem with people writing gay characters in het relationships either. I think we had this discussion a while ago here where someone shipped Dumbledore/McGonagall and felt guilty for it, but people were mostly like, "Dude, as long as you're not saying there's anything wrong with him being gay, or that he isn't gay in canon, it's fine." It's just a fic, it doesn't affect his canon orientation.

btw I'm not in any version of Sherlock fandom, but from what I've seen from afar I do agree that he's likely asexual. The comments trying to take that away from his canon self bug me way more than any amount of "I write him screwing John because I personally find that to be hot" fics ever could.

He's non canonically asexual. He can very easily be read as such in many versions (including canon and the BBC version), but I've yet to see any version where he flat-out says he has no interest in sex.

I really like the idea, and I've started writing him as asexual more than I used to, but please don't get upset at people for something that isn't clearly stated in canon, and so ultimately comes down to interpretation.

You're entitled to your opinion and everything, but if you're not even in the fandom/show/books/movies, please don't jump on a "character is this in canon" bandwagon. For every person in fandom who believes canon!Sherlock to be asexual, there are ten who believe him to be heterosexual/gay/aromantic/trans. Some have even written academic analyses on the subject. If you're not informed on the subject, I think many of us would really rather you didn't add just noise to the crowd.

I agree about it not being offensive to ship canonically asexual characters. (Or gay characters in het ships.)

There is a huge difference in canon putting a by-all-accounts-asexual character in a sexual relationship or a by-all-accounts-gay character in a straight relationship (unless they're canonically bi, of course, and the straight relationship isn't used to erase their past or imply that their same-sex relationships/interests were just a phase/the like), because that's erasing asexual and gay visibility, and someone shipping against canon. If the reasoning is that the character being asexual or gay is wrong/gross/unnatural/such or straight-out denying canon, then, yes, it sure as hell is problematic, but if it's just because you happen to like the idea of an asexual character being in a sexual relationship with a particular character (also, you can have sexual relationships and still be asexual) or a gay character in a relationship with someone of the opposite sex, it's not really offensive. Sure, more LGBTQIA+ visibility in canon is always a good thing, but ships are often based on very simple and silly reasons, so it's not really all the serious.

Agreeing that there's a major difference between canon erasure and fandom shipping, since most ships are just "well I found it hot" and dude I have zero problems with that.

I just wanted to clarify that while asexual people can have sexual relationships, for a variety of complex reasons (personal experience, here) there's a pretty big difference between an asexual person entering a sexual relationship for reasons other than sexual attraction, and an asexual person just suddenly deciding they experience asexual attraction. (If you did this without erasure of that character's past, and without making it something that they now experience all the time, I'd go for it being demisexual and that's cool too, just saying there's a difference.)

Basically, I don't care if people write asexual characters as sexually interested, have at it, but I twitch a bit when they say it's still asexual representation without really knowing how asexual sexual relationships work and not doing the research. (And I don't mind if people want to ask me, either, I'd rather they got it right.)

Example of this: Ten bedding the Virgin Queen because he's about to die and wants his name writ large on history = an asexual reason for having sex. Eleven bedding River Song because she's just so smexy omigosh = a sexual reason for having sex.
