I find it depressing how dismissive people are of Classic Who.

Not really. New comers may find it difficult to find a good starting place, there is just so much to cover. You can start at the very beginning with William Hartnell, a great Doctor to be sure but not the best for someone getting started who is used to the pacing of more current tv shows. So, there are a couple other good places for new fans to jump in but Eccleston is probably the easiest. New who DVDs are just easier to find and more readily available.

I started off with New Who and started watching older seasons after Tennant's second season. I think two, four, seven, and nine were the best Doctors.

Yeah, but there are lots of people in fandom who are genuinely dismissive. I mean, it's their prerogative, but still...

To be fair, there's also a lot of Classic fans who look down their noses at the newbies. It doesn't always create a very welcoming atmosphere.

Yeah, but I can count those on one hand, that I've encountered. So I'd say it's by far more often the other way 'round.

Not necessarily...I'm primarily a Classic Who fan, but I respect that it can be hard to know where to start with the show. The Ninth Doctor's story was specifically intended to be a starting point for new viewers, so it's a good logical place to start. Then, once you know which bits they enjoy, it's easy to recommend which Classic serials they should watch. (Want to know who that guy in the Dalek wheelchair was? Hey, let's go watch some episodes with Four!)

Oh, I agree. I started watching Nine, but now I'm mostly into Classic Who. What I don't really get is fans who refuse to show any interest in pre-Nine Doctors. I mean, it's a show with such a long and lustrous history*. Why not show some interest in the Doctors who made it possible for your favourite to exist in the first place?

*Personally, I think Classic Who was, overall, much ''braver'' and less afraid to challenge its audience than New Who.
